In its 1980-81 club year, taking the gavel of president Tues-

president. The club will resume meetings in September, with
summer projects including maintenance of the Old Livingson

LIVINGSTON-Members
of the First United Methodist
Church will attend the chur-
ch’s second annual church-
wide picnic following morn-
ing services Sunday in Liv-
ingston City Park.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Nor-
man will provide fiddle and
guitar music, as they did last
year.
The picnic is sponsored by
the church Council on
Ministries. Families are ask-
ed to bring their own picnic
lunch, with suggested hours
from 12 noon to 3 p.m. The
council also suggests wear-
ing casual clothing for
church, to go immediately to
the picnic site, with signs to
be placed for directions.
Picnic tables, but no grills
are available at the park. Br-
inging folding chairs and
tables is suggested, if
available.
For recreation the church
will provide volleyball, bad-
minton, frisbee, kick ball
and bats. Others may bring
additional game equipment
and golf will be available.
Parents will assume
responsibility for their
children. In case of incle-
ment weather, the picnic will
be served in the church
fellowship hall.
Regular worship services
will be held, Church School
at 9:45 a.m., mornin' war-
ship ai h:45 a.m. and 11
a.m.; and evening services
at 6 p.m. ..

Garden club captures six awards
LIVINGSTON-The Polk
County Garden Club has
learned the club garnered
six awards, three first place,
at the Texas State Garden
Clubs, Inc., spring conven-
tion in San Antonio April
8-10, members were told at a
luncheon meeting Tuesday
in the home of Mrs. Otto
Hawkins.
The club, in the bronze
category, won first for the
President’s Report, the club
year book and for communi-
ty services. The community
services included the club’s
work in the Old Livingston
Cemetery (upkeep, cleaning
and additions, such as ben-
ches), their participation
(with a float in the parade)
in the annual Folklife
Festival and the Yard of the
Month program. Their phF^
ticipation in the 1979 Folklife
Festival in October also in-
cluded a plant sale.
The club took honorable
mention for contributing to
the Wilma Aiken Scholar-
ship, contributing to
Tridents Prairie project, and
for 100 percent subscription
to the district newsletter.
Tridents Prairie is a con-
servation project sponsored
by Texas Garden Club’s Inc.
It is a tract of land in East
Texas set aside for the
preservation of plant and
wildlife in its natural state.
The club’s cortimunity ser-
vice committee includes
Mrs. C. E. Jacobs, chair-
man; Mrs. P. H. Sharp and
Mrs. R. R. Dickerson.
Mrs. Jacobs heads the
cemetery project, Mrs. Inez
Watson has been chairman
for the Yard of the Month
and Mrs. W.W. Aylor the
float project for the Folklife
Festival.
Applications for the
awards were made by the
club’s awards commitee, in-
cluding Mrs. Charles
McKirn, Mrs. O. T. Carlisle,
Mrs. P. H. Sharp and Mrs. C.
E. Jacobs.
The final meeting for the
current club year closed
with installation of officers
for 1980-81, with Mrs. Russell
Johnson as the installing of-
ficer in the absence of Mrs.
P. H. Sharp, who is ill.
In presenting the gavel to
Fay Aylor as president, Mrs.
Russell said “the club’s
members have shown their
confidence and trust in you
by awarding you the highest
honor within their power.”
She presented a red rose,
noting “red is the strongest
color of all the hues.

Inez Watson was
presented blue flowers as a
symbol of loyalty needed for
the job of vice president,
Johnson said. The vice presi-
dent will assist the president
and represent the office in
the president’s absence and
serve as committee chair-
man.
Mrs. J. C. (Etta) Dean was
presented pink petunias,
symbolic of perfection,
Johnson said. The office en-
tails keeping accurate
records of meetings, roll
call, maintinging an up-to-
date membership list and a
record of club awards.

Glover accepted periwinkles
from Johnson, symbolic of
“happiness your messages
will bring,” as correspon-
ding secretary.
Gold marigolds, represen-
tative of money, were
presented to the new
treasucer, Mrs. James
(Nell) Smith. Her duties
were outlined as keeping ac-
curate records of all dues
and monies received, giving
monetary reports at the club
Stings and serve as chair-
man Of the finance commit-
tee and of all money-making
projects.
Mrs. Janies McKee was in-
stalled as historian, the of-
ficer who “keeps the scrap-
book, the history of the,
dub,” Johnson said.
Mrs. O. T. Carlisle was
given yellow flowers to sym-
bolize the “light you will give
to the community with your
articles...reporting the hap-
penings of the club to the
news media...,” Johnson
said.
As chaplain, Mrs. Vance
(Betty) Neatherly was given
lavender flowers,
“representing the serenity of
vour office,” Johnson said.
Dorris Sharp, absence
from the meeting, will serve
the dub as second vice presi-
dent and parliamentarian.
