Flood workers share night of appreciation
LIVINGSTON - Polk County
said "thanks'' Tuesday night to the
many people who assisted during
the October floods, recognizing
them during an appreciation bar-
becue given in their honor at the
Livingston VFW Hall.
The event, with sponsorship help
from area banks and Champion In-
ternational, drew over 300 people -
people who lent a hand in a variety
of ways during the emergency.
"On the evening of Sunday, Oct.
16. when the calls started coming
in, you responded," said County
Judge John Thompson, briefly
recapping the emergency. By 10
pjn. that night a temporary com-
mand post had been established at
the Orudaska Subcourthouse and at
2:18 in the morning the judge
signed an emergency declaration.
At 8:30 a.m. Monday, Oct 17,
members of local emergency
response agencies met in a briefing,
reviewed the flood status, made as-
signments and moved the command
post to the squad room of the Polk
County Law Enforcement Center.
"Throughout the flood, you
responded," Thompson told the
crowd. The response came during
emergency calls of all types and as
rescues were made from rooftops,
cars, creeks and barges in the river.
Many of the rescues arc known on-
ly to those involved, the judge said.
Thompson recognized the
agencies, organizations and in-
dividuals who came together in,
what guest speaker Clay Kennely
of the Division of Emergency
Management confirmed was a very
successful local effort.

plicators will be held at the Texas

Robinson, professor and Extension
entomologist and coordinator of the
Overton courses. "These programs
are not for initial licensing."
