Reds Stand Firm
For Bases Along
Dardanelles
London, Nov. 14, (UP)—An au-
thoritative source said today that
Russia was standing firm on her
demand for military bases along
the Dardanelles, the strategic gate
way between the Black and Aegean
Seas.
Informants said a newly disclos-
ed Soviet note to Britain reflect-
ed no change in Soviet policy con-
cerning the straits.
British foreign policy experts
fear the Question will develop into
a major issue between the Soviet
and Western powers.
A foreign office spokesman re-
fused to comment officially upon
the Soviet note at the daily press
conference. The situation was. dis-
cussd briefly off the record.
The gravity with which Britain
regards the latest Soviet stand was
reflected by the fact that foreign
office kept secret for more than
two welks receipt of the note.
Under the Potsdam decision that
the big1 three should make known
to Turkey their views concerning
the future of the straits, Russia
has demanded that she be per-
mitted to “join” Turkey in the de-
fense of the Dardanelles.
Agent Tells How
To Prepare Less
Tender Venison
College Station, Tex., Nov. 14,
(UP)—Opening of deer season in
Texas brings to wives of success-
ful hunters the problem of using
less tender cuts of venison.
Edith Lawrence, specialist in
food preparation for the Texas
A&M College Extension Service,
offers venison sausage with its
variety of uses- as a solution.
The shoulder, neck and lower
portion of the ribs when boned
make good sausage, says Miss Law-
rence. Here are the directions:
Grind the meat, using three
parts deer meat to one part of
fresh pork fat. If a drier sausage
is preferred, use four parts deer
meat and one part of pork fat.
Season with one and one-third
cups of salt and three-fourths
of a cup of black pepper to 60
pounds of meat. About three-
eighths of a cup of sage may be
added to the seasoning mixture,
according to taste. (Three-eighths
of a cup equals one- fourth of a
cup, plus two tablespoons.)
WHY
A SOAP SHORTAGE?
You’ve Heard Rumors. Here Are the Facts!
/
There is a world-wide shortage of animal fats and of
^ vegetable oils. This shortage affects all of us. For instance,
this year soapmakers have been able to obtain only one fifth
of the imported oils they used in 1941—far less domestic
fats, too.
If the sausage Is to be kept for
sometime, stuff it in a casing or
muslin bag, Miss Lawrence sug-
gests. She adds that the sau-
sage may be smoked, depending on
family preferences.
Ground venison may be used as
any other ground meat ... . in
meat loaf, with spaghetti or i;n
chili, for instance. Sometimes ev-
en the choice cuts from an old Pin-
in'al prove difficult to cook tender,
and in this event they should be
ground. In addition to adding sea-
soning, add some fat, too, the spe-
cialist advises, for aenison. usually
contains insufficient fat.. That is
sometimes a reason ft remains
tough after long coofkmg.
Deer i season East of the Pecos
River is from November 16-Eecem-
bei 31. West of bhe Pecos it is
November 19-November 4.

Because of the world-wide shortage, manufacturers are'
^ unable to get the amount of fats and oils they need to make
not only soaps, but also paints, textiles, tires, leather goods,
floor coverings, electrical appliances, etc.
In the face of these conditions, American soap manufac-
9 turers have done their utmost. They have turned all the fats
and oils they have been able to obtain infef soap just as
quickly as possible. .
But for the help of American housewives, the shortage of
^ soap would have keen far more serious. Last year, more
than one out of every nine packages of soap sold was made
