Walburg Saturday night be-
came the front-runner in the
double elimination Church League
Softball Tourney. They defeated
St. Mary’s 6 to 0 to become the
only undefeated team left in the
tourney, which started with 12
teams.
The field was reduced to five
as Thrall eliminated West Tay-
lor Saturday night, defeating
them 11 to 5.
Tuesday night’s action will cut
two more teams out' of the tour-
ney. Brethren will play Taylor In-
dependents in the first game at
7:30 at Sportsman’s Field. In the
second it will be St. Mary’s vs.
Thrall.

Mary’s only 2 hits as he shut
them out. Garner got a double in
the second and Ruzicka a single
in the fifth.
Walburg got the scoring start-
ed early. The leadoff man, Gus
Neitsch, got a hit and was

CHICAGO UP) — The College
All-Stars, given little chance
against Baltimore in Friday
night’s mid-summer football clas-
sic in Soldier Field, could upset
the National Football League
champions or lose by 50 points.
That’s the summation of Coach
Otto Graham going into the final
week of preparations for the 27th
annual contest which the profes-
sionals have dominated by win-
ning 16, losing 8 and tying 2.
The Colts are 18-point favorites
in the game which will be tele-
vised and broadcast nationally
(ABC—9 p.m. EST).
“Anything could happen,” says
Graham, the head football coach
at the Coast Guard Academy, who
will be leading the All-Stars for
the third successive year.
Although this does not appear
to be one of the better All-Star
squads, the team will have size
and passing ability — two factors
.necessary to combat the pros.
Twenty-five of the 47 men on
the squad are 220 pounds or bet-
team for the second time has
claimed three top West Coast
teams used pep pills in dominat-
ing the Detroit trials.
In an interview with Indianapo-
lis Star sportswriter Bob Wil-
liams, Ruuska said, “women
seem to be more vicious than the
men. They will try almost any-
thing in order to win.”
The Santa Clara, Calif. Swim
Club and Multnomah Swim Club
of Portland, Ore., tv/o of the
teams the former Berkeley,
Calif., swimming coach accused,
took top honors in all six indi-
vidual events in the women’s tri-
als. Ruusak said the Los Angeles
Athletic Club also used the stimu-
lants.
The coach of the 1959 Berkeley
“Y” women’s national champions
said pep pills were found in lock-
er rooms at the trials and' that
the case has been turned over to
the chairman of the Women’s Na-
tional Swimming Committee.

of sour grapes.”
ter and the passing chores will
rest on the arms of Don Mere-
dith of Southern Metohdist,
George Izo of Notre Dame and
Pete Hall of Marquette.
The All-Stars must stop the
Baltimore offense, a task which
professional teams have been un-
able to meet.
Johny Unitas will do the pass-
ing to Ray Berry, Jim Mutschel-
ler and Lenny Moore and that
means the collegians must pre-
sent a formidable pass defense.

Fines Levied
Against Two
AFL Clubs
DALLAS Iff) — The Dallas Tex-
ans and Los Angeles Chargers of
the American Football League
have been fined for starting the
season too soon.
Dallas was penalized for hold-
ing a school for quarterbacks a
week before it was supposed to
start training. The Chargers got
their fine for holding an extra
tryout camp before the training
season began.
Each was reported to have
been fined 82,000 but Lamar Hunt,
owner of the Texans, would not
reveal the amount.
Commissioner Joe Foss could
not be contacted for an official
statement on the fines but Hunt
and a spokesman for the Charg-
ers admitted they had been
stuck.
The fines came after Harry
Wismer, president of the New
York Titans, complained that the
early start violated the league
rules and that it gave an advan-
tage to the Texans and Chargers
over other members of the
league.
The Los Angeles spokesman
said permission had been obtained
from the league for the extra try-
out camp but that when several
players under contract showed
up, Coach Sid Gillman suited
them up rather than let them sit
around the dormitories.
Hunt said he violated the rule
through a misunderstading. He
explained that the National Foot-
ball League holds schools for
quarterbacks and the AFL cons-
titution has no rule mentioning
it.
