On Saturday before the second
Sunday in June we attended the old
Christine Convention in Cullman
County The President for the past
twenty years, Chester Boren, did his
usual good job of
handling the pro-
gram and it was
a great conven-
tion. This is one
of only a few
country conven-
tions still having
a Saturday session
which is usually
better than Sun-
day. We appreci-
ate our friend and
song writer, J. L.
Boren, seeing that
the convention was
well supplied with
our books. Mr. & Mrs. W. F. Mash-
burn and Mr. & Mrs. Gray Goodwin
made this trip with us.
The second Sunday we went to
Sand Mountain near Rainsville to the
DeKalb County Convention and, as
usual for that part of the country, it
was a great singing. A. B. Bouldin
has sold lots of Singers' Joy up there
and he is tops on our list. Ben and
Joy Black did our driving and sing-
ing on this trip. We enjoyed seeing
and visiting with Mr. & Mrs. Wilbur
Wilson of Chattanooga; V. 0. Fos-
sett, Mr. & Mrs. Lonnie Combs and
Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Roach of Dallas.
We had visitors passing thru Birm-
ingham on the third weekend, Mr. &
Mrs. O. W. Phillips and Mrs. Cochran
of Dallas, Texas They attended a
singing with us on Saturday night
at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John F.
Laird. The Lairds have the basement
of their nice home fitted up for a
monthly singing, complete with piano,
organ, bass fiddle, accordion, etc. Mr.
& Mrs. Laird have been teaching and
report some good schools. We appre-
ciate them very much.
On Sunday we attended a singing,
along with the Texas visitors, in
Blount County and enjoyed it very
much. The chairman was J. C. Gibbs,
mayor of Oneonta. Mr. & Mrs. Ed
Coshatt went with us
The fourth Sunday in June we were
with Marlin Williams in his fine sing-
ing in Randolph County. We meet a
lot of good friends there each year.
Especially did we enjoy meeting with
David Maddox and Carlos White.
Both are doing a good job of selling
our books in nearby counties, also
the Dorsey Yarbrough family. Mr.
Yarbrough has had two fine schools
in Georgia and is looking forward to
more. We are pleased to have them
with us and you will be hearing a
lot from them. Ben and Joy Black
made this one with us.
The first Sunday in July, Joy and
Ben attended a mighty good singing
in Cullman County, near the home of
our song writing friend C. C. Calvert.
July, 1961 STAMPS QUARTET NEWS Page (11)
Our. thanks to the North Star Singing
Convention for furnishing our books
for this one.
The second Sunday in July we went
to Lamar County near Vernon with
Dewey Harrison. We met a lot of
fine friends and especially were we
glad to see Mr. & Mrs. Denson Tate.
Mr. & Mrs. W. F. Mashbum made
this trip with us . . . rather we made
it with them.
Not enough schools are being
taught this season, but we are get-
ting good reports from those who are
teaching. Reynold Shubert and Pick-
ett Smith report a very good one at
Prospect, Alabama, near Jasper. Our
good friend Paul Wylie of Walker
County is teaching, also Mr. & Mrs.
Okley Evans of Clay County stay
busy most all the summer teaching
and are doing a great work. Albert
Doss has one coming up here in the
County at Kimberly; Asa Smith has
another one in Cullman County. Oth-
ers have schools coming up but these
are a few that came to mind.
SINGERS' JOY still goes out good
and is being used a lot. This makes us
feel mighty good, so keep the orders
coming.

Monroe, Louisiana
By Garland May
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Stamps & Readers:
We have attended several good con-
ventions, as well as the closing of
two Gospel Singing Schools and en-
joyed each very much. Of course we
listened to the All Night Broadcast
over KRLD, Dallas, featuring the
closing exercises and well prepared
program by the Stamps Quartet
School of Music and their guest sing-
ers: We enjoyed it very much. From
all reports, this was a wonderful
school this summer. We are proud
that a number from this area attend-
ed and some of them are the out-
standing musicians of our section.
We attended a home coming and
singing at Old Hebom Church in
Winn Parish on the second Sunday in
June. Attended the school closing in
Marion, Louisiana where Mr Robert
Howard and Miss Mardell Nash Beck
had a fine school. Then back to Mar-
ion on Sunday for the singing con-
vention with Mr.. Lifford Allen and
Mr. Russell Nolan in charge. Gary
Davis and I made these together and
they had wonderful singings. It was
good to see and hear Curtis Doss and
Quartet again. They are a wonderful
group of fellows and singers.
The first Sunday in July was our
Booster Singing Convention here in
Monroe and it was good. We had as
our guests Mrs. Vera Vaughan and
Mr. & Mrs. Pete Kendrick, who were
on their way home from the Dallas
School. Mrs. Vaughan remained here
in Monroe at the home of the Thomas
Duncans for the school here that be-
gan Monday, July 10. We believe, as
well as many others who have attend-
ed this school previously, that this is
the best one we have had. At this
time, nearly 200 boys, girls and
adults have enrolled. Mr Otis Deaton
is in charge and is doing the general
class teaching. We say without any
reservations that Mr. Deaton and the
other members of the faculty are
among the best to be found in Gospel
Music. Mr. Deaton is teaching a won-
derful school. Two of the faculty
members of the Stamps Quartet
School are teaching here, Mrs. Vera
Vaughan, private voice; and Mr.
Cecil Pollock, private piano. Two bet-
ter qualified teachers could not be
found. They both have all they can
do. Miss Pauline Green is teaching
primary class work and is doing a
wonderful service. The school is be-
ing taught in the new air conditioned
First United Pentecostal Church in
West Monroe, Louisiana. Rev. E. W.
Caughron is pastor. He and the mem-
bers of his congregation have made
each one feel welcome. A wonderful
spirit prevails and the attendance is
large for both day and night classes.
Pupils are here from Gladewater and
Winnsboro in Texas; Jena, Olla,
Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Grayson,
Sikes, Bastrop, and other places in
Louisiana.
A few Saturday afternoons ago I
was at the Washateria near the col-
lege here, and while waiting for my
laundry I was reading an issue of the
Stamps Quartet News* which I had
just received. A gentleman came in
and asked about the operation of the
dryers, then came over to me and
said, “Well, I see you are reading
the Stamps Quartet News.” He then
introduced himself as Rev. Marcus
Adair of Canyon, Texas. We had a
nice chat, then I met his fine family
—his wife and three lovely daughters.
Bro. Adair told me that his daugh-
ters had attended several sessions of
the Stamps Quartet School of Music
and had appeared on programs with
several professional groups, also with
Mrs. Hugh Bentley of Amarillo. Mrs.
Bentley's article each month is one of
my favorites in the News. It was
good to meet Bro. Adair and family
and we hope they come our way
again.
We plan to attend Mr. L L. Robin-
son's convention near Bastrop, Louis-
iana. Mr. Robinson and his two fine,
talented daughters, Linda and Rita,
along with Miss Janet Downing, are
doing a lot for Gospel Singing. The
same goes for Mr. & Mrs. Thomas
Duncan and daughter Irma, who is a
splendid musician, also young Gary
Davis, who attends more conventions
in other states from this area than
anyone. Some of the others in this
area who are giving of their time and
money for the great and worthy
cause of Gospel Singing: Mr. J. W.
Spells, who works with^ and trains a
group of young folk in his home;
Mr. & Mrs. James Larche, Mr. &
Mrs. Buck Monroe, Mr. W. V. Sim-
mons, Mr. Cockerham, Mr. & Mrs. U.
C. Cockrell, Mr. & Mrs. Jones, J. H.
Mayfield, D. 0. McDaniel, Mr. & Mrs.
B. T. Smith. I wish I could make
personal mention of everyone but
space will not permit.
My closing thought is, “Keep Gos-
pel Singing clean, and sing for the
glory and honor of Kim, who blessed
us with this talent.”
