Polka Arrott Suspect
In Boarding House Fire
DALLAS. Tex il l*) Police
have arrested a suspect in .1
three-alarm boarding house lire
which killed three persons early
today in Dallas. Police report
that the 34-year-old suspect, a
roofer, set fire to matresses in
the boarding house before to-
day's fire. He was believed
drunk at the time Thirteen per-
sons lived in the two-sfory
frame boarding house, and all
managed to escape except the
three victims. They were 83-year
old C. D. King and his 80-year-
old blind wife, and another el-
derly man identified only as
“Mr. Miller.”
Dallas Ford Plant Workers
Due to Approve Settlement
DALLAS, Tex (UP)- Some
2,500 workers at the Dallas Ford
Motor Company assembly plant
are expected to approve a settle
ment of an argument which
caused a strike June loth. The
agreement was announced yes-
terday by representatives of the
United Auto Workers and Ford
The argument was over a work
standards dispute Some worker-
claimed they were given more
work than they could do.
Two Year Old Survives
Chewing Razor Blades
SAN ANTONIO. Tex il.'P».
A two-year-old San Antonio boy
is reported in fair condition to-
day after chewing on some razor
blades. He is Douglas Curtis,
whose mother found Inin (hew-
ing on the blades and rushed
him to a hospital. X-rays showed
pieces of the blades in the boy's
stomach.
Texas Highway Patrolmen
Wear Bright New Badges
AUSTIN. Tex. (UP).—Officers
and patrolmen of the Texas De-
partment of Public Safety are
wearing bright new badge's 1o
day. The brightness isn't the
only new part about the badges,
however. The color and design
also have been changed for
the first lime in 20 years. The
old shield type has been replac-
ed by a large round one, winch
is easier to read
First $5,000,000 Bonds
Sold For Now Reservoir
DALLAS. Tex (UP). The
first $5,000,000 worth of bonds
to build the iron bridge reser-
voir on the Sabine River has
been sold by the Sabine Hivei
Authority. The rtseivoir will be
built 45 miles east of Dallas,
near Greenville. Under an ear-
lier agreement, the Sabine River
Authority issued the first $a.-
000.000 in bonds, and Hie City
of Dallas will issue the next $15
000,000 worth.

south of Avalon this morning.
The pilot was killed.
A woman at Avalon, between
Ennis and Italy on Highway 34.

Mrs Gambill was killed in a
f ar accident near here Saturday
night.

three-count charge of espionage
and conspiracy, the defense ac-
complished its main goal - to
have the 41-year-old rocket ex
pert cleared of any taint of be-

could have carried up to 18
years in prison and a $10,000
fine, or both. Nickerson still
faces a 30-yeai term, but may get
leniency.
The Army court-martial in
Redstone Arsenal in Alabama
recessed after the government's
withdrawal's and Nickerson’s
guilty plea.

told newsmen. "I was very
pleased to hear them withdraw
those serious charges" Nicker-

sile program to a rocket maga-

in the charge accused Nickerson
of lying about sending copies
of a memorandum he wrote to
radio and news personalities.
Nickerson's defense contended
he wrote the memos only to reg-
ister Ins belief the Army is best
qualified to handle missiles in
the I 500 mile range Defense
Secretary Charles Wilson alloted
such weapons to the Air Force
last year shortly after Nickerson
went into action with the idea
of getting the order modified
Nickerson has been compared
with the late General Billy Mit-
chell in his dedication to a mili-
tary cause.

George Davis
Retires as City
Judge Here
George Davis, police radio dis
patcher and city recorder here
since March 1, 1954 lias retired
after completing his vacation.
Davis first went to work as a
city police officer here in 1945.
He left in 1945 to work in Birm-
ingham Alabama for 13-months
before coming hack to rejoin the
force
He was away from the police
depart incut for about four
months in 1953 during which
he had an operation, hut other
wise has been with the police
department since,
Davis was born in Dahlonega,
Georgia In 1891, and has resided
in the Ennis area for 37 years
He firsi came to Texas in 1912
and came to Ennis in 1920 to
work for the railroad as an as-
sistant. foreman and carpenter
in the bridge and building de-
partment
He later worked for the l&GN
Railroad out of Houston for a
hurt while m tlx special agents
department before coming to
Alma in 1923 to farm
He stayed on the farm until
1945, when be went to work in
a bomber plant at Fort Worth
before becoming a city officer

Davis was married in 192.3 to
Miss Ed.sie Horroll of Alma
They now reside at 1010 North
Dallas Street. Their daughter
Moddcll, is married 'Mrs. Fred
Edrington) and now lives in
Waxabaehie.
Davis plans a visit back to
his old hometown in Northeast
Georgia sometime in the near

the scene when the crash was re

pilots body were found The
sheriff remained at the scene
until service crash crews arrived
McCollum said the crash was
only about two miles from where
a jet from Hensley Field crashed
last month, killing the pilot.
While 0 was not yet known, it
was believed that the plane
which crashed this morning may
have also been from Hensley
