THULE AIR BASE. Greenland,

Thule Air Base, Greenland, the
northernmost Air Force inspiration
of United Stat.es Northeast Com-
mand i USNECi, completed the Inst
known aircraft engine change to he
accomplished atop the high, cold
Greenland i^'C Imp during three
Arctic black winter day* of January
This is the story of the airmen's
accomplishment:
When a ski-equipi* d C-47 supply
plane landed at an isolated went her
station on the ice cap, the crew's
check ot the airplane's engines
proved that the eratt could not de-
velop sufficient power lor a sate
takeoff.
The defect, could not be repaired
A new engine was necessary he I ore
attempting the return flight to
Thule Air Base. But never belnre
!uwl anyone tried to change an
engine during the Arctic winter,
when there is almost iim light, atid
temporalures average fili-liO degrees
below zero. And continuous winds
with the sharpness of razor blades
whip through every sl.it.eh ol
clot hing.
But unless the engine change was
completed in short order, the $!lfi,-
000 ('-'17 could he damaged by the
wind and temperatures long helore
th<> springtime with its rising
temperatures and blessed light,
would arrive to make an engine
change feasible.
A radio call brought another
47 with a new engine aboard.
Immediately, the maclianie , went
to work. They built a provisional
framework from tMile.s, draped can-
vas around the framework to shield
the engine from the wind, and went
to work removing the faulty en-
gine.
It was heart-chilling work, but
it was done. Now the second phase
of the difficult task began. Pow-
erful spotlights were turned on to
light up the pitch black darkness

was reminiscent ot a superb, hat
artificial, movie set.
