Using Climate Models in
Agriculture Operations
We have started the new
year with some very beneficial
rainfall, and certainly everyone
is feeling better with planting
season and spring grass just
around the comer. I do not
mean to be the bearer of bad
news, but we are a long way
from being out of the woods.
The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration’s
(NOAA’s) climate predictions
are not very encouraging. The
Jan. 17 model predicts below
normal precipitation for the
next three months and the U.S.
seasonal drought outlook is
predicting persistence of the
drought through April 30 for
most of the Southern Plains and
West including Texas and
Oklahoma.
The three month period
from October through
December was the driest since
1956 for Texas and most of the
Southern Plains. Historically,
our highest three month period
for rainfall is April, May and
June. If we are going to catch-
up on rainfall this is when it
should normally happen. Let’s
keep our fingers crossed.
I know these models are
only predictions and in this case
I hope they are wrong, but they
are usually pretty close to being
right. And they are the best
tools we have for making crop-
ping, pasture and range deci-
sions. In Australia they are cur-
rently 70% accurate in predict-
ing crop production through the
use of computer models.
However, they do not have the
Gulf of Mexico, which can
cause dramatic changes in
weather cycles in a relatively
short amount of time.
Most operators are already
using climate models to make
management decisions. After
2005 and 2006 many cattlemen
across the state began manag-
ing as though they were always
in a state of drought. A smart
old geezer once told me, if you
are managing for drought and it
does not come then you have a
windfall, but if you are unpre-
pared for drought you will have
a wreck on your hands. That is
a hue statement, but with a
multiple year drought even the
best managers will stmggle.
We were disappointed at
the low turnout for the general
meeting of the members of the
DAC last Tuesday evening.
However, we did get two new
members for the board of direc-
tors and some good ideas for
the coming year. Please con-
sider becoming involved with
the DAC.
For your calendars:
1. Breakfast at the DAC
on Feb. 2 from 7 until 10
beginning at 7 with the conces-
sion stand opening at 6
3. Jam session on Feb.
12 beginning at 6:30. There is
no charge - just bring your
instrument, your singing voice
or your toes for tapping
4. Mexican dinner on
Feb. 16 - watch Pig Tales for
more information
Hope you are enjoying the
