LCRA names Phillips as
interim general manager
Special to the East Bernard Express
AUSTIN — The Lower Colorado River Au-
thority board on Nov. 20 named Ross Phillips
the organization’s interim general manager.
Phillips is one of two deputy general man-
agers and oversees about three-fourths of
LCRA’s 1,800 employees. He will assume the
role of interim general manager on Jan. 1.
LCRA’s current general manager, Becky
Motal, announced in September that she is
retiring on Dec. 31 after 2Vi years as general
manager and 27 years at LCRA.
The LCRA board is conducting a search
for a permanent replacement for Motal. The
deadline for applications for the job was
Nov. 15.
“This is an important job and the search for
the right candidate shouldn’t be rushed,” said
LCRA Board Chair Tim Timmerman. “Ross
has had an outstanding career at LCRA and
has earned the respect of the staff, the Board
and our customers. We are very appreciative
that Ross has agreed to assume responsi-
bilities of the interim job to ensure a smooth
transition of leadership.”
Phillips joined LCRA in 1990 as a com-
puter programmer. In 1995 he was promoted
to operations manager over LCRA’s electrical
transmission services business. In 2000, he
was promoted to executive manager of Trans-
mission Services.

there,” he said.
As a result, Spenrath said
he will stay put while Hardin
will be the sole tenant on the
courthouse’s first floor.
Spenrath believes it’s not
the best utilization of the his-
torically-restored structure.
“I think the courthouse
should be filled because it’s
the centerpiece for our county
and a lot of people go in there
every day looking for servic-
es,” he said. “I could certainly
see the county judge’s office
being over there.”

Hardin, meanwhile, said
he’s glad to have a new office.
Though he’s been presiding
over cases in Wharton County
since 1995, he has previously
been forced to share an office.
“This is the first time I’ve
had my own office,” he said,
noting that he’s only the
fourth judge elected to preside
over the 23rd District since
1919.
And the timing is just
about perfect. Beginning in
January, Hardin will begin
hearing in Wharton 25 per-
cent of all criminal cases for
his district.
‘Abu will see me around
here more, which is great
because I love Wharton,” he
said.
