— Stephenson ready for role at state representative

ing back tears. “I think we’ve
done a pretty good job.”
Stephenson pointed specifi-
cally to the college’s growth as
evidence that the board and
staff have accomplished their
goals. When he first joined
the board in 1996, there were
around 3,200 students system
wide. Today there’s more than
7,400.
He credits a spirit of coop-
eration for that success.
‘We’ve had a good board at
the college because we work
together,” he said. ‘We are a
team.”
Whether hell find a simi-
lar atmosphere in Austin will
remain to be seen. Stephen-
son and other members of
the 83rd Texas Legislature
were sworn in on Tuesday.
Stephenson won’t be the only
freshman legislator anxious
to get his feet wet. Of the
150-member Texas House,
there are 40 freshmen and 23
others who have only one ses-
sion under their belts.
“It’s going to be an interest-
ing challenge,” Stephenson
said. “Hopefully we’ll do some
smart things.”
Lawmakers must focus on
four critical areas, he believes.
These include transporta-
tion, public safety, water and
education. Not to mention, of
course, balancing the state’s
budget.
“Our biggest problem is
we’ve grown faster than we
can keep up with,” he said.
One key to the state’s fu-
ture is to focus on a skilled
workforce. Stephenson be-
lieves implementing more

vocational-level courses at the
high school and junior college
levels would be of great bene-
fit to the economy. One way to
help pay for those additions is
to create public/private part-
nerships between schools and
businesses.
‘Without a workforce,
nothing will work,” he said.
Though he’s going in as
a freshman legislator, Ste-
phenson is by no means naive
when it comes to politics. As
the county’s former Republi-
can County Chairman, he has
certainly had his fair share of
the differences of opinion that
often exist between Republi-
cans and Democrats.
Expecting to change anoth-
er’s viewpoint is unrealistic,
he believes. But that doesn’t
mean the issues can’t be dis-
cussed in a respectful manner,
and that a consensus can’t be
reached.

month, will wrap up calendar
year 2012.
Around the state, sales tax
revenue in December was
$2.34 billion, up 13.1 percent
compared to December 2011.
“Gains across major sectors
boosted state sales tax rev-
enue,” State Comptroller Su-
san Combs said. “Collections
were strong in sectors such as
retail trade, manufacturing,
oil and natural gas, construc-
tion and telecommunications.”
State sales tax revenue has
now increased for 32 straight
months.
Combs sent December
sales tax allocations totaling
$552 million to cities, coun-
ties, transit systems and spe-
cial purpose taxing districts.
