New York advertising tycoon Al-
fred W. Erickson and Mrs. Erick-
son. The paintings were sold at
Parkebernet Auction Galleries in
56 minutes for a total of $4,679,250,
about $1.5 million more than their
estimated value.
Double Auction Record
The sale brought more than
twice the previous world auction
record of $2,188,800 for an art
collection of any size.
The Rembrandt, which got an
opening bid of $1 million, brought
more than twice the price ever
paid for a single painting, sold
either at auction or privately.
The late Andrew Mellon’s pur-
chase of Raphael’s “Alba Madon-
na” from the Soviet government
for $1.1 million in 1931 was the
previous world record.
Another painting in the Erick-
son sale, “The Reader” by the
French 18th Century artist, Fra-
gonard, also broke the world auc-
tion record for a single painting.
It was purchased by banker and
art patron Chester Dale, acting
for the National Gallery in Wash-
ington, for $875,000.
