ognized post officers and other de-
partment and district officers.
Recognition was also rendered to
the past-Post Commanders, both at
the ceremony and those who were
unable to make it
Historical highlights of the post
were given by Comrade Jodie
Amundson, {he “historian” of the
post. He highlighted the beginning
years, the building of the original
post, followed by the flood, and the
rebuilding of the post in downtown
Clifton where it is located now.
After rearing the poem, Fla rider's
Field, Chaplain Polete gave some of
the history of Robert E. Binford.
“Binford was bom in Beeville in
1917. His family later moved to Clif-
ton, where he attended Clifton High
School.
“Binford enlisted on March 15,
1941, and after basic training was at-
tached to the 13th Cavalry, 1st Ar-
mored Division. He was sent to
Ireland for training for the North Af-
rican Campaign.
“Binford was leading a fuel train
to the front, during the time when
Rommel was kicking the butt of the
English and American troops,” said
Polete. “At that time it was not safe
to move at all."
Polete went on to say that Binford’s
vehicle sustained a direct bomb hit
on Feb. 14, 1943, at the battle of
(Castleleer) Pass. Binford was bur-
ied in (Tunisia), North Africa.
i’m pleased that the Commander
and Joe (Hinson) invited me to come
to this special celebration,” said Past-
Department Commander Clifford T.
Teer, after his introduction.
“I first visited the post in 1958 and
I have been pleased to observe your
activities for the past 38 years,” Teer
ful lot for rids community.*
Tw never aeen a group of veter-
ans get together with more determi
nation, man when the post was
-flooded, and you had to find a new
post," Teer added. “You have turned
this into a beautiful post with all your
hard work and determination.”
Teer spoke of the many volunteer
services of the VFW, and mentioned
the many hours put in by the volun-
teers of Post 8553 at the Waco VA
Medical Center. He said that he had
known Past-Post Commander lbery
Lindberg for 30 years, and how he
was happy that Lindberg was able to
come to the celebration from the
Medical Center, where he “has been
for some time.”
Department Senior Vice Com-
mander N.F. (Red) Layne opened his
address by giving his impressions of
Clifton.
“I got to town early this morning,
not knowing how long it took to drive
down from Fort Worth,” Layne said.
“After getting coffee at the Dairy
Queen, I took time to drive around
and even visited the park where kids
were playing. No one was worried
about them being safe. That kind of
safety, and the flags up and down the
streets of Clifton, are all a pan of what
this post has done in the community .”
“It is an honor for me to be here
today to help celebrate the 50th an-
niversary of the post,” Layne added.
He said that last year, 90 posts had
celebrated 50th anniversaries and
that it can be looked on as a half-cen-
tury of service to veterans and their
families.
“There have been many changes
over the 50 years," Layne said, “but
the one thing that never changes is
patriotism.”
“The VFW relies on a large and
ever-growing membership,” Layne
said. “Each new member helps us to
fulfill our commitments to the veter-
ans. The goals of the VFW were set
out in 1899, and issued and signed
in 1936. We meet the goals through
our VFW programs.”
Current goals that Layne men-
tioned included the building of a bet-
ter America and a true accounting
of the ROWs and MlAs of all the
wan. He added, “We will never rest
until we know*
After congratulating the post on
its “golden anniversary,” he con
eluded by saying that he was sure
that the post would continue to grow
and play a vital part in the commu
nky.

ter were recognized by Commander
Teer as charter members of the post

year pins.
