Competition Held Here
CLIFTON — The Scripps Howard
National Spelling Bee Area 29 Com-
petition aponaorafecally by the Fort
Worth Star-Tekgram waa held in
Clifton ISD’a Bettis Auditorium on
Friday, March 9.
Five area schools—Clifton, Kopperl,
Meirdian, Morgan, and Walnut
Springe—competed in the spelling
bee. Eighteen students represented
these area schools.
The champion, Selena Medkn, from
Kopperl, will represent the area in the
Fort Worth Star-Tekgram Champion-
ship Spelling Bee on Apnl 4. Runner-
up was Cody Pullin in Walnut
Springs,
The Scripps Howard National Spell-
ing Bee Finals will be held May 26
through June 1 in Washington, D.C.
Judges for the Area 29 Spelling Bee
were Elisabeth Broome (Morgan),
Bonnie Spies (Walnut Springs), and
Sue Miller (Clifton). Pronouncer for
the bee was Mike Brown (Clifton) and
coordinator for the Area 29 event waa
Gail West (Clifton).
“Everyone who participates in this
annual spelling bee is a winner,” ex-
plained West. “The ability to spell
comes not from memory alone, but

from understanding languages—the
origin of words and the concepts they
represent. The Spelling Bee program
is an important step in promoting
literacy. It is designed to be an educa-
tional experience for the participating
students.”
BCCFA Offering Short Session
In Cheerleader Gymnastics
CLIFTON — The Bosque County
Conservatory of Fine Arts is offering
a short session in cheerleader gym-
nastic preparations which is designed
to prepare anyone interested in cheer
leader tryouts to learn bask tumbling
moves.
The class is scheduled to begin on
March 25 and will last four weeks.
The beginner class will be held Mon-
day afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. and
and was a member of the Arabian
Knights, a power tumbling team. He
competed in power tumbling for one
year and has taught tumbling far two
years. He has worked with numerous
cheerleaders in various stages of tum-
bling ability.
Anyone interested in attending the
class should contact the BCCFA office
at 675-3724. Office hours are Monday
through Thursday, 1-5 p.m.
SPELLING BEE FINALISTS - Bosque County’s 199041 Na-
tional Spelling Bee Finalists have been named, and include those
pictured here. They are (by city): Clifton—Mary Buchalski.
Gabriel Hall, Justin Harvey, Allison Jacks, Cara Kennedy;
Kopperl—Jenna Finley, Selena Medlin (winner); Meridian—
Brendan Day, Sara Selke, Steven Tubble, Tanunie Tuggle, Angela
Williams; Morgan—Jennifer Jackson, Margaret Jones, OJ. Pin-
nell, Priscilla Villalovoe; and Walnut Springs—Cody Pullin
(runner-up).

From Navy Course
NORFOLK, Va. - Marine Sgt. He-
len J. Zulegar, whose husband, Jack,
is the son of George W. and Juanita
Copeland of Route 1, Iredell, recent-
ly graduated from the Group-Paced
Instructor Course.
During the four-week couse, con-
ducted at Naval Air Technical Train-
ing Center, Millington, Tenn.,
Zulegar studied writing and analysis
of learning objectives, development of
lesson topic guides, and test item con-
struction, among other topics.
