43,000 housing permits were issued
during the first 11 months of last
year—higher than the 12-month total
of almost 41,000 permits issued in
1989.
The State Comptroller’s Office
predicts that Texas housing starts will
increase by 30 percent in 1991, up
from an estimated 46,000 in 1990 to
about 59,000.
Housing permits across Texas be-
gan spiraling downward in 1984 after
overbuilding took its toll. Not until
1989 did permits stop sliding and set-
tle at less than 4,000 units per month.
Permits are still nowhere near the
1983 total of 272,000, but Sharp said
that even a little growth puts Texas
ahead of other areas of the country.
He added that the upswing in hous-
ing puts the state economy ahead of
the national cycle.
