Life’s
Tough
I
Greetings.
How much money would the
average person spend for a
cookie? A quarter? Fifty cents?
A dollar, maybe?
Now you must understand.
I’m not talking about a bag or
package of cookies. Nor am I
referring to one of those snack-
packs containing two or three. I
mean one cookie. Singular. Ex-
clusive. Alone. Lonesome.
Scared. Well, maybe not scared.
Would anyone in their right
mind pay for one cookie?
I don't know about the right
mind stuff, but I did purchase
one cookie a couple of weeks
ago...for $175.
You think that's funny!?!
It was not your everyday
cookie. It was one of those spe-
cial items baked the size of an
extra large pizza. The kind that
sells for about $5.
So, I paid $170 too much. I'm
no expert at buying cookies. I’m
young and inexperienced.
Surely most of you gave up
pondering my sanity long ago,
but in case this story has
shocked you into realizing that
I still do write a good, confusing
column, let me explain.
Several months ago, a certain
soft drink company entered a
conspiracy with some shopping
malls in Dallas, Waco and other
cities. The drink company
agreed to give the pop tabs on
their aluminum cans an un-
natural color if the malls would
accept these tabs from cus-
tomers in return for phony
money. Sounded like a good deal
to me.
I began drinking products
from this company exclusively,
not caring that marketing psy-
chology was making me a vic-
tim. I saved every funny colored
tab I could get my hands on. and
soon began pestering everyone
I worked with to save their tabs
for me. I was known as "The
Thief’ to one person, because I
searched every desk in the
building at least twice a day,
taking any loose tabs I found.
I had a partner in the,scheme,
and together we amassed over
900 of the metal pieces. Two
tabs could be exchanged for one
dollar in funny money, so we
had about $450 when we attend-
ed an auction organized for the
promotion.
It was at this auction that I
bought the $175 cookie. Since a
soft drink costs about fifty cents,
that cookie represented the ac-
tual purchase of $175 worth of
drinks.
What is truly amazing about
all this is that I paid the money
nearly two weeks ago and I still
have not picked up the cookie.
