SWIMMER’S EAR
Every summer multitudes of
water-sport enthusiasts are
plagued by the painful condition
of swimmer’s ear. The symp-
toms may start with itching
around the outer ear, or perhaps
sloshing noises that persist for
hours after leaving the water.
Finally, you wake up the next
morning with a painful earache.
As you might expect, swim-
mer’s ear is caused by water
stopped up in the ear canal. This
moisture provides excellent
nourishment for bacteria that
causes an infection. The infec-
tion causes swelling of the tis-
sues in the ear canal which
results in pain.
Why do some people get swim-
mer’s ear and others don’t? To
understand the answer, you’ll
have to take a look into your
ear. From the outer ear, your
ear canal winds like a country
road carrying sound waves to
the ear drum. Those people with
‘‘uphill" ear canals have
difficulty getting water to drain
out of the canal. For others the
water drains easily.
For the susceptable individu-
al there are two methods of
preventing swimmer’s ear. 1.)
You can keep the water out
(wear earplugs if necessary); 2.)
Use a drop or two of alcohol or
a commercially available swim-
mer’s ear drop after each swim
(the alcohol causes the water to
evaporate quicker). Q-Tips can
cause swimmer’s ear even
without getting water in the
ear.
The most effective treatment
for swimmer’s ear will require
a trip to your doctor. He will use
various combinations of ear
drops, antibotics, and often pain
medictaion. Even with these
medications, it will take sever-
al days to clear.
