THK CLIFTON RECORD. THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 20, 19H6, RACK 2A
Greetings.
"I think someone put too
much in," she said as I walked
in the door. All eyes immediate
lv turned in my direction. I
glanced behind me to see who
they were looking at. but I was
alone.
It was late Friday afternoon.
1 didn't need this. I did not even
want to be here. Numerous eyes
continued to scrutinize me as if
I had committed a serious crime.
I slowly 'approached the area
I had left only 20 minutes
earlier, constantly alert to the
lynch mob smell in the air. I
then noticed the dried foam sin-
rounding the lid of the contrap-
tion. 1 realized I had put too
much determent in the washing
machine.
Breathing a sigh of relief. I
thought to myself. "No problem.
As long as I don't go swimming
with my clothes on, nobody will
know the difference." I imagin-
ed myself jumping into a swim
ming pool and the water turning
sudsy from the left-over soap in
my shirt.
• "What do you expect from a
single male?" I asked the lady
who had spoken when I entered.
I>he just smiled.
-"Well, I'll be more careful
with the next six loads." 1 said.
/‘The next SIX loads'’!?" she
exclaimed.
L’Yeh. I have two loads here

and six more in the car."
"What do you do? Wait two
months to wash?"
"No," I answered. "Only one."
She did not act like she believ-
ed me. A lady sitting nearby
kept staring at me and a man,
standing beside a woman I
figured was his wife, chuckled
occasionally.
1 went outside to the car and
returned with a large bundle in
my arms. 1 then began filling
four washing machines The sit
ting lady stared and the stan-
ding man chuckled. I continued
mv conversation with the first
lady.
'1 usually try to save
everything until I need to wash
my bedsheets. Then I throw all
my clothes and towels in the
middle of I lit1 bed and wrap t he
sheets around them It's a lot
easier to carry I hat way."
She shook her head as if she
understood. The lady stared and
the man chuckled. 1 was begin
ning to enjoy this. I had
everyone's attention, so I went
back to the car and returned
with two more loads.
"You*weren't kidding, were
you?" she said.
"No." I answered. "I have six
loads in the washers and two in
the dryers."
I then pulled out a ten dollar
roll of quarters and began ac
tivatingthe machines. I actual
lv had only five dollars worth of
change left in the roll, so, as the
woman stared and the man
chuckled, I left to get more.
Two young Mexican males
entered a short time later, They
looked at me several times and
spoke in their native language
It didn't matter 1 could guess
what they were saying:
"Hey, Pedro. Look at that
gringo. I bet he .waits two
months to wash his clothes."
Pedro just stared and
chuckled.
