mueionert' Court received a updated
report on restoration of the historic
1886 county courthouse June 24. Ar-
thur (Kit) Murray, courthouse com-
mittee chairman and reatoration
project manager, told the court that
County Judge Ernest W. Reinke, Jr.,
and County Commissioner J E. (Jim)
McDowell had joined him in a walk-
through the previous week aa the first
phase of renovations neared com-
pletion.
Murray adviaad the court that he
was awaiting a final architectural
report on the initial phase The Wil-
liams Co., AIA, Austin, is in charge
of planning for the project.
The court authorized repainting of
some courthouse windows by the con-
tractor for $600. Murray promised a
further progress update for the next
session of Commissioners’ Court
Judge Attends EDA Interview
In other business, Judge Reinke told
the court that he had attended an in-
terview session recently conducted in
Waco by the Economic Development
Administration concerning a Boeque
County application for an EDA eco-
nomic development grant.
The grant, if awarded, could amount
to an estimated $60,000. Under fed-
eral regulations, an additional sum of
about $17,000 would be required from
participating entities.
Bosque County, Clifton, and Merid-
ian have agreed to share that coat.
Bruce Gaines, executive director, Cen-
tral Texas Economic Development
District, Waco, prepared and submit
ted the grant'application.
Funds from the grant, if obtained,
could be used to carry out strategies
to further county economic growth.
The course of action would be deter
mined from a study of county needs
and resources
Secretary Attends Seminar
Tab Hollingsworth, secretary to
Judge Reinke, recently attended a
day-long Texas Management Seminar
in Austin to train in civil and crimi-
nal court docket computerized control,

County Acquires Property
County Sheriff Dewell R. Harper
has advised county officials that the
county has taken possession of a
10-acre site outside of Walnut
Springs The property has an estimat-
ed value of $20,000, according to the
sheriff.
Sheriff Harper recently told the
court that the property had been the
scene of a raid following a drug com-
plaint in November, 1987. The mat-
ter came under the jurisdiction of the
Western District of the United States
District Court in Waco, which has
since awarded the property to the
county.
The sheriff said that county officials
will determine how the site could best
serve county needs. One possible use
mentioned earlier was as a pistol
range or training facility for sheriffs
department personnel.
Geriatric Center On List
The Meridian Geriatric Center,
with 70 employees, has been added by
the court to the list of Bosque
County’s largest employers, as sug
gested by County Commissioner
Steve McCoy of Precinct 2. The center
had been overlooked in information
gathered in a survey conducted in the
private sector by Bruce Gaines of the
CTEDD.
The study’s goal was to include Cen-
tral Texaa firms with 50 or more em
ployees. The original tabulation
included Chemical Lime, Inc., Clifton,
156; Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home,
155; Goodall-Witcher Hospital Floun
dation, Clifton, 150; Wall’s Industries,

AARP Chapter Plans July 9 Meeting
CLIFTON - The program for the
Bosque County AARP Chapter No.
2917 meeting set for July 9, at the
Clifton Civic Canter is “Hie Eyes
Have It!” Insight into the causes of
poor vision in older persons will be
discussed.
Essie Green, program chairman,
will show 80 color slides and a 20
minute audiocaasette will comple-
ment the program. Hostesses will be
Agnes Meeks and Lila Ulland.
The number of elderly in the Unit-
ed States is continually increasing,
and these individuals are more
healthy and functional than ever.
They continue to learn and to excer-
cise more because there is no age that
you can’t start to improve.
Most elderly want to stay in their
own homes as long aa they can, but
with safety and dignity in mind. For
that reason, AARP has checked the
Medical Alert System and after a
thousand responses found that it does
not live up to expectations. Con-
sumers are urged to shop around be-
fore buying such a system, and, if
possible, know one’s salesman.
It is also suggested that persons rent
a unit and try it before buying.
AARP is in favor of this type of alert
system, but warns consumers not to
just choose any system available on
the market.
The Boeque County AARP chapter
is happy to add Marjorie Muratet and
Don and Edith Wimberly to its mem-
bership. |
The picnic at Meridian State Park

York, who suffered a fatal heart at-
tack aa he was preparing to entertain
the group with music.
