AUSTIN — The grace period for
telephone users to switch from the
old 817 area code to the new 254
code will expire Sunday, Aug. 24.
Persons who have not already taken
measures to make the change are
advised by the Texas Public Utilities
Commission to do so now.
The new 254 area code took effect
Sunday, May 25* but a 90-day grace
period has allowed callers to use ei-
ther the new or the old code. After

are included in the new 254 area
code, including much of Central
Texas, with all of Bosque County in-
cluded in that region.
Wichita Falls and 25 counties in the
northern section of 817 will be as-
signed the new 940 area code. Fort
Worth, Arlington, and other sur-
rounding cities will retain the 817
code.
In 1995, Texas had a total of nine
area codes. By this year’s end, the
state will be home to at least 15 area
