4th Straight Title!
WACO - The Clifton High School
varsity tennis team took top District
16-2A honors for the fourth year in a
row, easily outdistancing their district
rivals. The boys swept their title, while
the Lady Cubs matched Moody for a
share of the girls' championship. The
overall team championship went to
CHS
“Any time you have people playing
in the finals of every division, you’ve
got to feel good about it!” said CHS
Tennis Coach Jack Gregory. “We took
the championship in three of the four
divisions, and came away with sec-
ond place in the other," beamed the
coach.
Josh Gregory took the boys’ singles
title, while the team of Wade Morton
and Justin Miller grabbed the boys’
doubles crown. Robyn Wilcox and Cara
Kennedy teamed up to take the girls’
doubles championship.
Joining those in qualifying for re-
gional tournament action is Stacy
McCue, who placed second in girls’
singles competition. Each of these
players will travel to Tarleton State
University, Stephenville, during their
last week of April. Tbp finishers there
will advance to the Texas State UIL
tourney, in Austin,
Narayan Patel and Damon Kersh
took the boys’ doubles consolation title,
.lake Miller grabbed the boys’ singles
consolation honor. Liesl Henrichs won
the girls' singles consolation title. Also
competing for the CHS squad were
Gree Quiroz and Michelle Barnett,
another girls’ doubles team.
“The girls division was very bal-
anced this year. Liesl lost to the even-
tual tournament winner, 7-5, 7-5.
Stacy came back and played an extra
match to claim second, and Robyn and
Cara split sets before finally winning.
It was pretty tight all the way around.
“In the boys’ division Josh won
pretty easily, but Wade and Justin
split sets in their finals. Jake just had
a bad draw to go against tllte third-
place winner in the first round,” said
the coach.
e Gregory praised the leadership from
this year’s CHS Tfennis seniors, includ-
ing Gregory, Morton, both Millers,
Phtel, and Wilcox.
“It's going to hit us pretty hard next
year when these kids are not around
any more! But, overall, I am very
proud of the way they have competed
this year," said Coach Gregory.
