Htttto operators stand ready Warning to landlords
T*rt»«Ntori
The mwi Ram concerning the
recent power outage eerved to ex-
plain the events leading up to the
power Ihilurs. In this article there
was deserved praise for the local
agencies that were providing assis-
tance to the community during this
power outage.
Most ate not aware of this, but
there Is a group of volunteers that
are also ready to serve the commu-
nity if It Is needed. This group is
comprised of ordinary citizens as
well as professionals from various
Reids. We are affiliated with the
Office of Emergency Management
and the National Weather Service.
We are amateur radio operators
otherwise known has HAMS.
The services we provide include
early warning weather sightings
and emergency communications to
other areas including the passing of
e-mail.
We can provide these services
from any accessible location with
privately purchased portable
equipment running on battery or
generator power.
E-mail attachments such as pho-
tographs from a disaster site and
early warning of extreme weather
phenomena are within the scope of
this service.
If an emergency condition exists
that exceeds the ability of local
county and state services, your lo-
cal amateur radio operators are
ready and willing to serve.

Changes for the better?
TuthecdMnr:
The other day I purchased a park
bench at a big sale and a pretty high
school girl showed up at the check-
out. I aid, “Are you going to do the
heavy liftingr She grinned, “Of
courser "They’re heavy; I tried to
pick one up and they’re real
heavy.” I gave her a frowny smile.
Really, I wanted to insist that a guy
do the heavy lifting - let a guy get
credit for being strong. We old-
fashioned women try to manipulate
things like that. We hate to see
■even one more woman trade in
’what she docs best for what she can
:do only second-best. (I’m sure this
* last statement will light a shuck
: under some feminist.)
' I was right about the bench being
loo heavy, but I didn't feel vindi-
cated. You sec, I hadn’t said what I
meant or said how I really felt. I
* could have, you know. Since I was
the one spending the money, I
could have indulged myself in
stipulating who could handle my
merchandise. Silly, right? I'm sort
of glad I didn’t lecture anyone
there, and give them my “take” on
our culture’s suicidal bent. I didn’t
spout off about those things just
because I wanted to be liked. Yeah,
* you know, liked. Smiled at and'all
that stuff.
In our times the worst thing we
can do ia be thought of as an un-
pleasant pereon; they’re rare, inde-
pendent and often seem to value
their own feelings about themselves
above the opinions others might
have of them. I used to think my
grandmother, who lived with us
when I was growing up, was like
that. She teemed against so much
of what was called progress. And,
of course, I was against her, since
she was to behind the times and all.
As I grew older, I decided that my
grandma was like a lot of old peo-
ple who wanted things to stay the
way they were because they were
more comfortable that way.
It'a fenny, though not humorous,
how things change. I’ve joined the
enemy’s side. Yeah, just like all old
people, I don't want things to
change either. Like Archie Bunker,
I want girls to be girls, and men to
be men. You see, I’m not afraid
that Norman Lear (the creator of
Archie Bunker series and The Peo-
ple for the (un)American Way)
would stereotype me. Lear and
Hollywood's influence have been
operating on our unsuspecting
minds for 20 years: MASH was
used to mock the military, and to
undermine our country’s right to
influence the world for the better;
Bunker was used to caricature a
conservative as an inherent racist
buffoon; Fred Sanford was a re-
verse bigot who could act with im-
punity. The life lessons for our un-
suspecting minds were/are: the U.S.
military has a hidden agenda, those
who believe in “conserving” the
basic ingredients of liberties and
responsibilities are to be viewed
with contempt and suspicion, and
the “brotherhood of ethnicity”
'.rumps the “one-nation” theory
every time. But television sitcoms
don’t make reality, and these shows
I’ve mentioned are not cases of “art
mocking life.” These showed are
cases of art making propaganda. No
one took them seriously back then.
Now, the liberal demagogues tell us
those shows depict the real U.S.
Our country haa been taking
some pretty dangerous turns lately.
Federal judges appointed (presiden-
tial appointments) during the Clin-
ton years have slammed down the
founding principle of all our rights:
that these rights are “endowed by
(our) creator.” The highest judges
(Supreme Court "justices") want to
be “progressive" too; so they are at
work dismantling the foundational
structure of our country’s laws.
However, we the people must carry
on in our politically correct daily
lives. After all, it might be bad
manners to talk like this!

To the editor!
Warning to landlords:
Did you know that If you rent to
a dead beat that he can live in your
house for two or three months
FREE and there isn't anything you
can do about ft? I met a couple
while running an ad to rent one of
my properties who were living in
the back of a pickup with four kids.
He told me he had a job and had
been on the job almost a year, but
they were having trouble getting a
place because of having to pay first
last and deposit.
So, like a fool I thought I would
help them and let them move in
without paying all of that. They
wrote me a check for the first
month and the deposit for S550, but
couldn’t cash it until he got paid
that week, which was fine with me
because it got those kids out of the
back of that truck. But when it
came time to cash the check, he
came up with the excuse that he
had to buy tires for his truck and
could only give me S350, so two
weeks later I finally got the other
$200, then the second month they
were over two weeks late. This
time he said he had to pay some
bills, like I didn't have any bills
myself. Then the third month I had
to chase them again for two weeks
and, when I finally caught them,
they only had $100, with a fabri-
cated story of he had to go to Lou-
isiana to a feneral. Now it is the
fourth month and he reflues to pay
anything, so I told him I wanted
him out of my house and he said, "I
HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS
SEVERAL TIMES. I’M NOT
LEAVING; YOU HAVE TO
SEND ME A CERTIFIED LET-
TER AND THEN TAKE ME TO
COURT AND IT TAKES ABOUT
two MONTHS BEFORE YOU
CAN GET ME OUT." Then he
proceeded to cuss me and threaten
me how he would just stomp me.
V/-H. in the meantime I am out
the two month's rent on my prop-
erty plus the damages they are do-
ing to my house - garbage all
through the house on the floor and
the yard looks the same.
So, landlords, beware when you
rent, you may run across one of
these deadbeats who live like this
all the time off of me and you and
the system....
These kinds of people must be
stopped some way.

Judges strike again
To the editor:
Well, the nine "Men and Women
in Black" did it to us again! They
now say that it is legal for the gov-
ernment (all the way from the mu-
nicipal to the federal) to take away
the property of a private citizen and
give it to another private citizen.
The only restraint is that it should
somehow end up being to the
“good of the community.” Trans-
lation: If it ends up bringing more
property taxes to the government,
that is for the “good of the commu-
nity,” supposing that the govern-
ment will spend it on something the
community would benefit from.
And again, they may not.
This sets such a dangerous
precedent that I hesitate to imagine
what could happen next. They
want to take religion from us; they
want to take guns from us; they
want to take normal marriage from
us; now they ARE taking our prop-
erty! We had collectively better
watch out, because the democracy
(or republic, if you will) that we
have enjoyed for well over 200
years is slowly disappearing before
our very eyes.
Hopefully, the upcoming vacan-
cies on the CoUrl will allow us to
have replacements who will follow
the Constitution as written, and not
mongrelize it with such things as
decisions in foreign governments,
public opinion which agrees with
the present Court, and applications
of what they believe the Constitu-
tion should say rather than what it
docs!
I can't quote Edmund Burke of-
ten enough: "The only thing neces-
sary for the triumph of evil is that
good men do nothing”!

Needs to be a dad
Dear Annie: I am an 11-year-
old girl, and my parents are going
through a divorce. Dad has a re-
straining order for the next two
years. The judge said I can’t even
call him. I’m supposed to see him
every other weekend, in supervised
visits.
My dad doesn’t like this ar-
rangement, so he refuses to see my
brother and me. I have seen him
only once in the last five months.
It makes me think he is not exactly
the father I thought he was and that
if he were a good father, he would
try to see us every chance he could.
It makes me horribly sad to know
he’s not willing to go to a visitation
center.
I don’t know what to do, which
is odd for me because I am known
to be very mature and a good ad-
vice giver.. My dad might not know
I feel this way. He expects me to
be tough. - Sad, Confused and
Angry In Hawaii
Dear Sad: Being “tough" has
nothing to do with it. This man is
your father, and he has an obliga-
tion to act like one. We don’t
know what he did to deserve a re-
straining order, but he should be
Willing to follow the judge's in-
structions regardless. Two years is
a long time for you to lose touch,
and he should make every effort to
see you, even under these limited
circumstances. Once the restrain-
ing order is lifted, it will be too late
to undo the damage he has caused.
Ask your mother to get a mes-
sage to Dad from you, saying it
hurts you deeply that he cannot
swallow his pride for your sake. If
he still refuses, we hope you (end
your brother) will discuss your
feelings with someone. You should
be In family counseling, but If not,
please discuss this with your school
counselor, favorite teacher or a
trusted adult relative, You should
not have to deal with this on your
own,
Dear Annlet As a retired edu-
cator, I currently am working as a

germ they encounter, nor should
you. But if this particular practice
worries anyone, we recommend
having passes made from plastic or

sprayed with a disinfectant after
use.
Dear Annie: How do I tell my
sister-in-law that an invitation to
my son’s wedding does not auto-
matically extend to her children,
their spouses and their children?
My son is not close to any of his
cousins and will not be inviting
them. Auntie thinks if she’s in-
vited, she should be able to bring
the whole family. We’re not talk-
ing youngster h<*e. The “kids” are
all in their early 30s and have their
own families. They all live within
blocks of one another and have
never completely cuL> the apron
strings.
When my daughter married a
few years ago, Auntie und Uncle
brought four people we weren't
expecting, and Auntie was com-
pletely oblivious (or indifferent) to
the extra hassle.
How can I prevent unwanted
guests without saying so on the
invitation? Please help. - Stuck
in the Middle Again
Dear Htucki Since Aumie has
done this before, it merits a per-
sonal phone call to say, "We’re so
sorry we eannot invite all the cous-
ins, but we have a limited guest list
and will not he able to accommo^
date your children and their fami-
lias.”
