Head Lice
Many misconceptions exist
regarding head lice. According
to the Center for Disease Con-
trol in Atlanta it "is not as-
sociated with poor hygiene or
social class." More accurately
"head lice infections are caused
by person to person contact.”
Personal objects such as combs
also may transfer the nits,
which are lice eggs that require
body heat, to hatch over a seven
day period.
Early symptoms of louse infec-
tion are itching of the scalp and
unusual irritability seen in
younger children.
"Clothing and cleanliness,” the
Center of Disease Control em-
phasized, "are not factors result-
ing in head lice infection,” It
added that in studies of children
in private and public school sys-
tems in Atlanta, no relationship

Most families stayed in the
provided shelters at the park,
while others, at a motel in
Meridian
was seen between socialeconom-
ic level and head lice epidemics.
Treatment for head lice is sim-
ple and effective using a varie-
ty of equally potent chemical
shampoos. RID, an over-the-
counter medication, is available
in most drug stores. A more
widely used treatment with
Kwell, a prescription shampoo,
is recommended by many pedi-
atricians and family practice
physicians.
Since all head lice respond to
chemical shampoos, the most
important aspect of treatment is
a thorough application in the
hair, which is repeated 24 hours
later to ensure eradication.
Head lice, as the name im-
plies, live on the head and the
hair only. As far as clothing is
concerned, standard washing
and cleaning procedures are
adequate measures to prevent
further infections.
As Murphy’s Law states, any-
thing that can go wrong, will go
wrong. With regard to head lice
it might read, “anyone who can
go to school can get head lice no
matter what you do to prevent
it.”
