32 Persons Indicted By Bosque County Grand Jury
By David Anderson
ASSOCIATE EDITOR
MERIDIAN — Indictments on a
variety of charges against 32 indi-
viduals, including five non-arrest
indictments, were announced late
last week by the 220th Judicial Dis-
trict Court’s office of Bosque

next month.
Archery Shoots
An archery group comprised of
members of the former Bosque
Bowhunters Association were
granted a request to hold shoots
on Aug. 30-31, Sept. 6-7, and Sept.
20-21 at the old city landfill, pend-
ing final contract approval by the
city attorney.
Dan Fowler, representing the
group, said that there is much in-
terest in archery in the community
and that many in Clifton feel that
this organization could be a big
plus for the citizens, especially
youths.
It was noted that a court case
involving the bowhunters had
been settled and that no appeals
had been filed. The council had
previously terminated a
bowhunters group’s lease due to
problems associated within the
organization. Since then, mem-
. bers of the previous organization
have formed a new group, the Clif-
ton Archery Association.
The club presented petitions
signed by local residents and busi-
nesses in support of the initiative,
and asked that a long-term lease
of the city property be considered.
Mayor Smith recommended that
the council approve the three
shoots and that the matter of the
long-term lease be taken up by the
council at its next meeting, since
it was not specifically listed on
Tuesday’s agenda. The mayor
noted that the council, at that time,
could entertain the possibility of a
lease, consider soliciting requests
for proposals from the general
public regarding the property, or
choose to do nothing.
Traffic Control
The council approved having
the city work crews paint stripes
at the intersection of North Av-
enue E and West 3rd Street due to
regular problems with drivers
running the stop signs. The
stripes, along with the word
“stop,” will be painted on 3rd
Street with the goal of keeping
traffic from entering the intersec-
tion without coming to a complete
stop.
For many years, the right-of-
way had been on 3rd Street, but
was changed after fire department
officials had asked the council to
have motorists stop at 3rd Street
instead, which gave freer exit ac-
cess on Avenue E by the depart-
ment when answering emergency
calls. However, many motorists
have continued to disregard the
stop signs.
Mayor Smith recommended
painting the stripes and word
“stop” to better enhance the mes-
sage to motorists. Another alter-
native discussed was to make the
intersection a four-way stop, which
the council might consider if traf-
fic continues to be a problem at
this intersection.
Banners
The council approved two pro-
posed banners to hang over Ffcrm
Road 219 (West 5th Street) for the
upcoming Oktoberfest celebration
and the Hunters Welcome, as pre-
sented by Todd Clift of the Cham-
ber of Commerce.
Myrtle Street Lease
Gary Arnold submitted a letter
to the council asking that the coun-
cil terminate a 99-year lease
agreement of Myrtle Street (which
intersects Highway 6) with Arnold
Motors that was enacted in 1983.
Present at the meeting were
George Arnold (Gary’s brother)
and John Portman (who has a
business on that property) to com-
ment on the issue. George Arnold
asked that the lease remain intact.
Mayor Smith raised the ques-
tion of keeping the property clean,
which was referred to in Gary
Arnold’s letter. George Arnold as-
sured the council that the property
would be cleaned up as per city
directive.
The council voted to not termi-
nate the lease.
September Meeting
A scheduling conflict for the
regular meeting of the City Coun-
cil next month has caused a shift
in meeting dates. The normal
meeting day will fall on Labor Day
Monday, Sept. 1, but in the inter-
est of convenience for those wish-
ing to attend the meeting, and
alternative schedule was reached.
on the prepared agenda, and
Council members do not plan to
attend. Instead, items that nor-
mally would have been considered
that day will be on a called
meeting’s agenda, with that meet-
ing set for 2 p.m. TViesday, Sept. 2.
