SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ~ Eight high
school seniors from schools in SHECo’s
service territory were awarded scholarships
to further their educations. Students com-
peted for scholarships by writing an essay of
not more than 1,000 words on "The Value of
Electricity in Our Lives." Another require-
ment for eligibility is that the students’
parents or legal guardians are current mem-
bers of the cooperative. Students in 31
schools were given the opportunity to par-
ticipate, with 64 applications received,
representing 18 schools in eight counties.
Winners include (1-r) Karen Lewis,
Livingston; Jamie Saxon, Corrigan-Camden;
Amanda Smith, Livingston; Courtney
Klawinski, New Waverly; Kim Buzbee,
Conroe; Marie Damon, Goodrich; and Mark
Chapnick, Tarkington. Not pictured is
Patrick Kilgore, Diboll. A reception honor-
ing the winners and their parents or guar-
dians was held May 12 at the cooperative. A
committee of 10 SHECo employees
reviewed the essays, which were presented
to them without disclosing the applicants.
County official to address DETCOG
LUFKIN -- Knox County Judge
David Perdue, president of the
Texas Association of Counties, will
be the nriricinal speaker Thursday,
May 25, at the annual membership
and awards luncheon of the Deep
East Texas Council of Govern-
ments.
The meeting begins at noon at
the Pitser Garrison Civic Center in
Lufkin, but will be proceeded by a
regional planning forum at 10 a.m.
Perdue, of Knox City, has also
served as president of the West
Texas County Judges and Commis-
sioners Association, as a board
member of the County Judges and
Commissioners Association of
Texas, and as a director of the West
' Central Texas Council of Govern-
ments and the Texas Association of
Regional Councils.
He is a graduate of Stephen F.
Austin State University in Nacog-
doches, a former educator, and for-
mer personnel director for the
Chrysler Corporation.
DETCOG John Thompson of
Livingston, county judge of Polk
County, said the council is pleased
that Knox has agreed to address the
meeting. "He is one of Texas’ most
outstanding county officials with a
deep insight to issues .Jeering our
county governments," said
Thompson.
The DETCOG meeting will also
honor the winners of the Dr. Ralph
W. Steen Memorial "East Texan of
the Year" award and the DETCOG
President’s Award for outstanding
committee service.
The council will also award two
Stewart and Malone Scholarships,
which are given annually to deserv-
ing students from DETCOG’s 12-
county region.
The annual meeting will also in-
clude a audio/visual report of DET-
COG activities the past year.
The regional planning forum will
discuss linkage agreements, agency
coordination, and one-stop shop-
ping for more efficient delivery of
services to the public.
Participating in the forum will be
the Texas Department of Human
Services, the Texas Employment
Commission, Texas Mental Health
and Mental Retardation, the Texas
Department of Commerce, and the
Texas Rehabilitation Commission,
the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development, the Texas
Council on Workforce and
Economic Competitiveness and
Texas Department on Aging.
