town) to George Race Smith Sr
and Mary Louiie Rogers and died
Oct. 23 in Baptist Medical Center
in Oklahoma City.
He attended grammar school and
junior high in Goose Creek He
moved with hii family in Septcm
her 1937 to Onalaska and finished
seventh and eighth grades He at-
tended Livingston High School and
graduated in 1942 at the age of 16
He was president of the Student
Council, valedictonan of the Class
of 1942, listed in Who's Who
among high school students in
Texas in 1942, student librarian amt
played baseball and football
In June of 1942 he attended Sam
Houston State Teachers College
Huntsville on a scholarship His ac
tivities included being secre
lary/treasurer of the Student Conn
cil. sport s editor of the college pa
per, "Houstonian", president of the
YMCA and president of the Press
Club.
In March of 1944 he joined the
Navy Air Corps' V-5 program,
training at Northwest Missouri
State Teachers College, Maryville.
Mo. The Air Force program was
curtailed and he transferred to the
Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes,
III. He was a regimental bugler,
member of the Drum and Bugle
Corps, and was assigned to Hospi-
tal Corps School at Farragut, Idaho
He requested to he assigned to the
Fleet Marine Force and was trans
ferrcd to Camp Pendleton, Califor-
nia. He went through Add medical
tech school and was sent overseas
to serve with the Fleet Marine
Force. He was later assigned to the
First Marine Division and served in
China, 1944-46. He received ins
honorable discharge in August 1946
in S*t Diego.
He entered the University of
Texas in September, 1946 as a
prerned student and graduated in
1948 with a BA in zoology with
minors in chemistry and math. In
September, 1948 he entered Baylor
University College of Medicine,
Houston, graduating with an M.D.
in June, 19S2.

at Shreveport Charity Hospital in
Louisiana, first year reaidency in in-
ternal medicine from 1913-54 at
Confederate Memorial Medrcal Cen-
ter in Shreveport, second and third
year reaidency in internal medicine
at Charity Hospital in New Orleans

and was chief resident of medicine
at l.oui*iena State University in
1955 56
Dr. Smith moved to Cuahinf in
July, 1956 to join Dr Clifford
sett and Dr J Douglas Green in the
practice of medicine at the Bassett
Clinic and to join the medical staff
of Cushing Hospital. He became a
full partner in the Bassett Clinic in
1961 Along with Dr. Green he
purchased the clinic from Dr Bas-
sett in 1974 and purchased the part-
nership from Dr Green in 1980 He
owned the clinic, presently known
as Medical Associates of Cushing,
until 1992 He retired in 1997.
In addition to establishing a suc-
cessful medical practice. Dr Smith
gave many hours to community,
county and slate organizations, in-
cluding service on the Cushing
Salvation Army Board, charter
member of the Jim Thorpe Athletic
Awards Committee; charter member
of the Cushing Youth Center
Committee. Rotary Club; Cushing
Chambei o! Commerce, serving as
chairman of the Streets and High-
ways Committee that was instru-
mental in creating a four-lane
highway east ot town, the Yale
Bridge and Robert Murphy Bridge;
whs instrumental in establishing
the Skilled Nursing Facility at
Cushing Hospital, was on the hos-
pital board of directors, was chief of
staff numerous times, served on the
building committee for the new
hospital, helped start the first
1CU/CCU unit in the hospital and
brought CPR to the local hospital
in 1966
He also served as president of the
Payne Pawnee County Medical So-
ciety, Cushing United Fund, Payne
County Industrial Trust Authority,
Federal Aviation Authority exam-
iner, Payne County medical exam-
iner, Payne County Heart Associa-
tion chairman, honorary member of
the Pavne County Sheriffs Posse,
Valley Hope Advisory Board, Cub
Scouts and Boy Scouts of America,
Cushing School Board, served as
Cushing High School football team
physician for several years and held
numerous, board and committee po-
sitions with the First United Meth-
odist Church. *— -• —
He was past president of the
Oklahoma State Baud of Medical
Examiners, past president of the
American Heart Association Okla-
homa Chapter, clinical professor of
medicine at Oklahoma University
Health Science Center, member of
American College of Physicians,
and fellow of the Amerii n College
of Cardiologists.
Since retirement he had served on
the Cushing Library Board and con-
tinued to serve on the Valley Hope
Advisory Baud. He wa* made a
lifetime member of the Oklahoma
State Medical Association and
Cuahinf Regional Hospital sttff

whom he marled in 1932 and who
died in an automobile accident in
1931. He marled the forma Lynda
Dost in December of 1939.

Wayne Smith and wife Betiy of
Oklahoma City; and four grandchil-
dren. Anna Lynn Smith, Sarah
Elizabeth Smith, Zachary Daniel
Smith and Jacob Race Smith
The family requests memorial
donation* be made to the First
United Methodic Church in Cush-
ing or the Building Fund for the
new Cushing Public Library.
Palmer Funeral Home of Cush-
ing was in charge of arrangements.

CLEVELAND -- Funeral services
for Jesse Oland Black, 64, of Cleve-
land were held Nov 22, 2000, from
Oak shade Baptist Church, with the
Rev, Jerry Bontrager and the Rev
Rodney Goins officiating. Inter-
ment followed in Black Cemetery
in Browndell
Mr. Black died Nov. 20 at his
residence in Cleveland.
He was born Oct. 7, 1936 in
Evadale, the son of the late J.A
"Jim" Black and Mary Ola Bunch
Black, and attended Evadale High
School. He had been a resident of
Cleveland for the past five years.
Mr. Black was semi-retired and
worked for G&S Fish Market. He
was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, May
Dell Black; daughters, Irene Goins
of Livingston, Brenda Kay Shaw of
Evadale and Shelia Brooks of
Cleveland; sons, Michael Black of
Beaumont, Robby Black of
Evadale, and Scott Pouncey, Chris
Rogers and Johnny Rogers, all of
Cleveland; sisters, Barbara Ann and
husband Charles Solley and Beverly
and husband Dale Phelps, all of
Evadale; brothers, Lynn Black and
wife Nancy of Nacogdoches and
Terry Black and wife Sandy of
Kountze; sister-in-law, Kathryn
Black; 14 grandchildren; six great-
grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Pallbearers were Michael Black,
Keith Brook, Chri* Rogers, Robby
Black, Jerry Black, Johnny Rogers
and Mark Tanton. Honorary pall-

her husband, Clipper Lee Sr.; sons,

Lee; and daughter, Lillian Ann Har-
rison.
