Q. What’s the difference between a fissure of the

A. The anus, or rectal outlet, Is the site where the dun

cure.
A fistula is not really a disease of the anus bat ratter

one of these and would like to know where I should go to

In almost every large city. However, it isn’t quite as sim-

A. Skin grafts vary in the thickness of the transplanted
skin, and thus vary in how close they appear to normal
skin. A graft which consists of the full thickness of skin
usually looks quite normal, while a split-thickness graft
which contains neither sweat glands nor hair follicles
tends to look like just what it is—a graft.

“We have to do away with
the Idea that breast cancer is
simply a lump in the breast,”
he insists. “Instead, there ex-
ists a stage in the development
of breast cancer at which the
cancer is so small (under one-
half centimeter) and localized
that the probability of metasta-
sis (growth from site to an-
other) is almost nonexistent,”
he says.
Cancer at this “minimal”
stage can be treated by a va-
riety of means with an almost
certain chance of cure, he
notes.
For example, he explains,
three studies currently going
on in this country show that
groups of women treated with
minimal breast cancer have a
20-year survival rate of 95 per-
cent.
“As long as we are still find-
ing breast cancer for the first
time in relatively advanced
stages, something that is 5-7
centimeters in diameter, I don’t
care what kind of treatment we
use, the mortality is not going
to change,” he says.
How does one find breast
cancer at the earliest stage?
Explains Dr. Gallager, even
more important than looking
for lumps, women should look
for earlier, more subtle changes,'
such as indistinct thickenings,
differences in texture, size,
coloration or minor deviations
in the nipple.

How’s your hydroponics this season? Neither a disease
nor a spare part for the furnace, hydroponics is soilless
gardening. We’ve talked about it from time to time, and
indoor gardeners love to experiment with it while wintry
winds blow. < v •
All home hydroponics units have 3 elements in com-
mon: the container, aggregate and water supply. The
first can be anything you have handy that fits what you
want to grow, such as a few bright-hued flowers and a
leafy plant or two. The aggregate is the growing medium.
It can be sand, peat, vermiculite or such oddities as
broken brick, cinders ot gravel. The water simply is the
water supply.

.io set up your own unit, put a layer of pebbles, broken
bits of flower pot or rocks in the bottom of a container; fill
with the aggregate recommended for the plants you
select; pat the aggregate level and add water. Allow ex-
cess moisture to drain out, then plug the-drainage hole.
Plant seedlings according to instructions, then get set for
feeding time at the botanical garden.
Soil nutrients have to be supplied for hydroponicallv-
grown plants. Garden centers sell ready-mixed food, or
you can make your own. For a good mixture that sounds
complicated, but isn’t, take: 10 oz. of ammonium sul-
phate; 3 oz. potassium sulphate; 5 oz. superphosphate
and 3 oz. magnesium sulphate. Mix lightly and apply dai-
ly. All ingredients are readily available at gairien cen-
ters. The hydroponics expert who gave me this formula
says he adds “enough iron to cover the headof a match,”
but I suspect your lovely, soilless plants will thrive
without it. For a fascinating winter gardening project, do
look into hydroponics. Check the garden center, your con-
tainer supply, and start soon.
All of these changes can
serve as early warning signs,
even before a lump shows up.
It is at this early stage that the
maximum number of options
for successful treatment i s
available.
