TO THE PEOPLE OF
THE CITY OF SILSBEE
I need your support for City Councilman
on September 14.1 am running for the
job I was forced to resign from through
pressure from members of the City
Council and City Administration, i be-
lieve you are entitled to know the facts
about the pressure used to force my
resignation.
THE REASON I RESIGNED -
Since I was elected City Councilman I have tried to represent
the people of Silsbee as an independent councilman. I HAVE
REFUSED TO BE A RUBBER STAMP FOR ANYONE.
As a councilman I have worked to make Silsbee a better
place in which to live. I AM FOR AND DO BELIEVE IN
GOOD LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Several months ago the Council became aware ot the fact
that a problem existed within the police department. After
discussing the matter with the City Manager, the Council told
the City Manager to give THE POLICE CHIEF 90 DAYS IN
WHICH TO CORRECT THE PROBLEMS. I do not believe the
problems have been corrected. I, therefore, believe that Sils-
bee needs a new Police Chief.
I believe the Police Chief has lost the confidence of the ma-
jority of the people of Silsbee, particularly the young people.
After I took an open stand on this issue, three members of
the council <onc of whom is not legally qualified to sit on the
Council as per Section 302 City Charter) decided that I had
to be kicked otf the Council.
For the past few months I have been sick and under doctor's
care. I have had to be hospitalized. My illness has caused me
to be absent from Council meetings.
i
Under the City Charter it takes the vote of at least three coun-
cilmen to excuse the absence. Although I was confined to
the hospital, three councilmen, who opposed me because I
would not be a rubber stamp, would not excuse me because
of my illness.
It was under such pressure that I resigned. I could have re-
fused to resign and I think I would have been able to hold on
to the scat to which I had been elected after a long and ex-
pensive court trial. This would have cost the City and me in
attorney fees and I’m sure that the people of Silsbee would
have been deprived of democratic representation for many
months.
X.
I chose to resign so that this matter of “rubber stamps” and
harassment could be taken out of the Council meetings and
law courts and be decided by the voters of Silsbee in a demo-
cratic election. f
I believe in democracy and I am against “rubber stamps ’. If
I you agree that Silsbee has had enough of rubber stamps and
j government by harassment, vote for me. I will do my best to
Ukecp on representing you as you want me to.
