Onward...thru the F02
By David Anderson.
City Editor
Thanks, Classic;
Thanks For Nothing, Blue!
There was good news and bad
news for Texas Rangers baseball
fans Monday
night in Clifton.
The good news —
Classic Cable be-
gan picking up
the games hith-
erto unviewable
by local cable
subscribers. The
bad news — the
Rangers had the dreaded Yankees
on the ropes, but lost, thanks to the
home-plate umpire. First, a little
background about the broadcasts
themselves.
Over the winter, Channel 4 in
Dallas bought most of the TV rights
to Rangers games. Previously, the
over-the-air broadcast rights had
been held by Channel 5, who used
Channel 39 (Clifton cable channel
9) for most of the broadcasts. How-
ever, Ch. 4 also owns Ch. 27, and
began running games on that fre-
quency. The bad news is, Clifton
cable subscribers don’t get Ch. 27.
After a few phone calls to the
sports desk here, I decided to call
Classic myself. The area manager
in Eastland was unaware of the
problem, and said as far as he knew,
no complaints had been received by
the cable company. He promised to
see what could be done, then added,
"weil get back to you."
To be honest, I figured that was
the last I’d here from them. I was
wrong!
Another manager called last Fri-
day. and explained they'd worked
out a deal to rebroadcast those
games on a currently-blank cable
channel, 44. The majority of the
time, there will be nothing on that
channel, but come game time (as
long as it’s not being carried on Ch.
4, the FOX Network, FOX Sports
Southwest, etc.), there it’ll be.
So Monday night was the test,
and Classic passed with flying col-
ors. Just before seven, on came the
feed. We briefly heard the booth
personalities joking with each other
as they ran through final mike-
checks, then on came the opening
and here came the Rangers versus
the Yankees.
The game was a pitcher’s duel,
and wound up heading into extra
innings. With New York leading 5-
4, Texas took the bat in the bottom
of the 11th, and promptly loaded the
bases with nobody out.
Luis Alicea had the chance to be
the hero. He swung, and tipped the
ball, which clearly struck the back
of his leg. Instant replay showed it
again, and again, and again. But the
home plate umpire did not have the
advantage of instant replay, and
apparenUy needs to pay a little bit
more attention to his job.
Instead of ruling the at-bat a foul
ball, he called it fair. The Yanks'
catcher promptly stepped on home
plate for the force out, then tagged
Alicea for the unlikely double-play.
That took the wind out of the Rang-
ers’ sails, and the Yankees went on
to take the one-run win.
So, after turning out the lights on
the four-hour foray, two thoughts
were left in my min'd: Thanks, Clas-
sic Cable, for coming to the aid of
Clifton's Ranger fans; and thanks,
Mr. Home Plate Umpire. I hope
your check from George
Steinbrenner bounces.

Dear Editor:
I’m just about tired of turning on
the TV, or picking up a newspaper
only to see Elian Gonzalez. What’s
the big deal9
This all started as another case
of people from another country
wanting to come to the United
States for handouts and live off the
taxpayers.
I did feel sorry for Elian at first,
as his mother was negligent for
putting him on that boat in the first
place; now it's gotten out of hand.
Hopefully, the Government stands
strong and sends him back to his
father, where he belongs. This has
gone on too long and the media is
to blame, once again.
It seems that any news item they
feel will create a conflict gives them
a need to thrive on it to no end
Then they keep throwing fuel to the
fire just to create more news to
cover. I guess that’s job security.
The media is ruining this country.
I just wonder who's paving for ail
this nonsense in Miami9 It can’t be
Elian’s relatives as they must not
work, being that every time a cam-
era is turned on. the whole neigh-
borhood is there to pose nice and
pretty. In fact. Miami must have a
high unemployment rate, being
that so many people have nothing
better to do than walk around hold
ing signs putting down the United
States m support of one little boy
who doesn't belong here anyway.
One person is not worth going to
war over Why not put that time, ef
fort, and money into helping the
children already in this country
who are going hungry, being
beaten, and abused, or who have no
family at all9
This would do a lot more for our
eour fry’s future as our children are
our future!

Dear Editor.
The Veterans Administration is
really dragging its feet in wanting to
move Purple Heart recipients to the
category 3 status that was mandated
by Public Law 106117
VHA Directive 2000-006. dated 29
February 2000 states
Change in the eligibility of veterans
awarded the Purple Heart
1 Purpose This Veterans Health
Administration directive implements
new eligibility and enrollment re
quirements for veterans awarded the
Purple Heart
2 Policy Public Law 106-117. the
Veterans Millennium Health Care
and Benefits Act. which amended the
law to place veterans awarded the
Purple Heart m enrollment priority
group 3. and to exempt those veter
ans from co payment requirements
associated with provision of hospital
care and outpatient medical services
3 Action [a] Veterans awarded
the Purple Heart may submit appro-
priate documentation <Le DD-214.
service records, orders of award, cer-
tificate. etc ) for inclusion into the
veterans Consolidated Health
Record (CHR) folder Field Stations
are also to fax these documents to the
Health Eligibility Center at 404-235-
1355J The sender requests this num-
ber not be published not the VA).
lb]. As an interim measure, the
Health Eligibility Center will provide
each Department of Veterans Affairs
health care facility with a partial list-
ing of Purple Heart recipients to as-
sist the facilities in manually
exempting these veterans from co-
payment requirements associated
with hospital care and outpatient
medical services. The Office of Infor-
mation (19) will develop software to
capture data on veterans awarded
the Purple Heart and effect other
changes in the MIA information sys-
tem necessary to accommodate pro-
visions to Public Law 106-117 relating
to Purple Heart Award recipients.
[c]. Field stations must ensure that
those veterans awarded a Purple
Heart who were previously, or would
be. classified in enrollment priority
groups 4 through 7 are placed in pri-
ority group 3 and not charged co pay-
ments.
Id]. Manual tracking is necessi-
tated until Veterans Health Informa-
tion Systems and Technology
Architecture (VistA) software modi-
fications are implemented to ensure
these veterans are not inappropri-
ately billed medical care co-payment
charges.

Heart are to be reimbursed for any
medical care co payments paid for
VHA care provided on or after Nov

Since this directive has been in ef-
fect since Feb 29. why is it that
Purple Heart recipients that try to
register with the VA m Waco are told
that they (the VA' knows nothing
about this Or ail this will do is keep
them from having to take a means
test Apparently the VA doesn t want
to do the manual input and as sure
as the dickens doesn't want to have
to reimburse anyone for medications
or other care
They can no longer say they have
no knowledge of this law because if it
is printed then everybody knows
about it and that blows that excuse
all to pieces Come on. VA Get off
your butts and give these men that
bled for their country the hand they
deserve instead of the hassle they get
from you
