personnel working on these
projects.
“I am so proud of our staff and
their commitment to this project,”
said Principal Anita Hebert.
“Over the last few years, our test
scores in math have been good,
but we have noticed that they
were consistently lower than our
reading and language scores. We
know that our teachers and stu-
dents are capable of producing
the very best, so now we will have
the best training to put into prac-
tice right here in Clifton.
“We want the education that we
provide in the early years to be the
highest quality anywhere. This
project will help us achieve that
goal,” Hebert added
Several staff members assisted
in the planning and development of
the grant project, including Lisa
Sharp, Kara Ripley. Lisa Shoots,
Zacha Gregory, Karen Hanson,
Teresa Kimbrough, Linda Roper.
Rhoda White, and Hebert.
The grant funds will be allocated
in April with the project beginning
this summer. Teachers will begin
their training sessions in June and
will develop mathematics stan
dards for each grade level.
Parents will be invited to be a
part of the project through partici-
pation in various training session
and activities that will be scheduled
during next school year.

MERIDIAN - The National
Weather Service will be presenting
a Skywarn severe weather-spotter
class on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m., at
the Meridian Civic Center. The
class is open to the general public,
and there is no charge to attend.
Continuing education units are
available for selected emergency
services personnel.
The National Weather Service
trains spotter groups. However,
spotter group organization is left to
the local Emergency Management
Director, or local police or fire de-
partments. Locally, the Bosque
County Amateur Radio Club and
the Bosque County Office of Emer-
gency Management coordinate
most of these efforts.

“Many people who are fascinated
by the weather have an interest in
serving as a storm spotter,” said a
NWS spokesman. The NWS needs
real-time reports of hail size, wind
speed, and tornado development
and known damage, in order to ef-
fectively warn the public. Even as
new technology allows the service
to issue warnings with more lead
time, spotters will always serve as
links between radar indications of
severe weather and ground truth
information.”
Each year, the NWS brings the
training to Bosque County, and over
125 persons have attended the past
three sessions. Organizers suggest
getting to the Civic Center early for
the best seating.
“The National Weather Service
does an excellent job of teaching
this material using a multimedia
presentation as well as a lecture
and question-and-answer format.
In addition to all the high-tech sci-
entific instruments, radar, and
computers available to them, it is
still the eyes of a trained Skywarn
storm-spotter that the NWS relies
on most in order to issue timely se-
vere weather and tornado warnings
to save lives,” said Dewey Ratliff,
BCARES emergency communica-
tions coordinator and state RACES
liaison officer.
Those with scanners can moni-
tor the BCARC repeater during se-
vere weather on 147.180 MHz.
