years between that of his first and sec-
ond wife. Peerson soon found that this
communal settlement was far from
being a paradise. Janson demanded
total discipline, and was a stern task-
master.
Cholera decimated the colony, and
when Peerson decided to end this flir-
tation with socialism, he was forbid-
den to take with him either his money,
or his wife. So, old, and now totally
destitute, Cleng set out, once more on
foot, for new horizons.
We know little of what he did during
this time, although there is great
speculation. But we do know that by
1850 he was in Texas, apparently mak-
ing his way to the state because of a
friend there, John Nordboe, who had
already lived here a number of years,
along with several other Norwegian
families who had settled to the east.
Feeling he had found his long-
sought-for perfect location, he re-
turned to Fox River to spread the
news, only to discover that cholera had
found that settlement, too. One of the
people now there was Ole Canuteson,
who with his family had made their
way from Norway, only to find death
and disease all around them. So they
were more than willing to listen to sto-
ries of a wonderful new land called
Texas. They settled near Dallas, and
stayed there about three years.
In 1853, Ole Canuteson founded the
state’s third Norwegian settlement in
Bosque County, which soon became
the largest in Texas. For the first time
in his 70-plus years, Peerson had not
been the pathfinder.
In recognition of his efforts to bring
pioneers to the state, the Texas Legis-
lature acted on Aug. 13,1856, to grant

Cleng Peerson 320 acres of land as an
honorary gesture, without compensa-
tion. Now 74 years of age, Peerson,
alone in the world, knew that he was
approaching the time that he would
need the constant care of others. So
he advertised in a newspaper read by
Fox River colonists that he would give
half his holding to anyone who would
move to Texas and take
