state to be completely refurbished
One of the fust steps is installing
"stop logs," 10 for each gate The
stop logs, used for each individual
gate, are 46 feet long and weigh
from 10,200-11,500 pounds
. "It takes five to six weeks per
gate and TRA had one set of stop
logs We relurbished their set jx!
duplicated it. so that with two gales
going at the same ume. it cuts the
lime in half," Mack said
The stop logs are inserted by
.crane into the spillway and a gasket
goes completely around the gate,
allowing the gate to then be raised
to be refurbished
"We'll always have one gate
open, as per TRA requirements,”
Mack said
An integral part ol die project is
the crane, which weighs 150 tons
and sits on a sixty-by-sixty loot
barge that is seven feet deep
Mack added that his crew will
alio be installing a computer sys-
tem, adding on to whut TRA al-
ready has, plus u new control room
with a backup generator
"This computer system will al-
low them to raise die gates widioul
gotng out to the bridge " Mack
said
Regarding the backup system,
which is a big advance m technol-
ogy, Mack said dial Sant Houston
Electric Cooperative Inc currently
foedi from die cast side and dial his
crew will build a service on the
wen side lor enhancement and
backup, which will result in a loud
of four sources ol power
"Regardless of any type ol emer-
gency or weather situation, they'll
always be able to open the gates”
Mack said
This is about a $7 5 million job
and although we've allotted a year
and a half for the job, it will actu
ally take a year or just a hide
longer," Mack said
The Boyer crew works four 10-
