Extension’s Character Counts Program Addresses ‘Caring’
MERIDIAN — The Texas Agri-
cultural Extension Service of
Bosque County offers the fifth
column in a series of articles
dealing with the "Character
Counts" program on building
positive character development.
The first four articles featured
trustworthiness, respect, respon-
sibility. and fairness.
"Only a life lived for others is a
life worthwhile.” This quote by
Albert Einstein helps us realize
that being a caring and compas-
sionate person is what makes our
lives complete.
Caring is at the heart of an ethi
cal person's character. Caring
people love, help, give, and are
kind. As young people participate
in community service projects,
they are developing their abilities
to be a caring person. Participat-
ing in these types of activities al-
lows one to show his concern for
others in an active and positive
wray.
Have you ever thought about
w'hy people show consideration,
kindness, compassion, and gen-
erosity to others? Some help oth-
ers because it makes them feel
good. Some show' concern be-
cause other people do. Some
show kindness because it hurts
them to see other people hurting.
Genuine concern for others is
a sign of growing up in children.
A big part of growing up is the
ability to think and care about
someone besides yourself. Car-
ing means taking the leap from
only thinking about yourself, to a
mature active interest in others.
Unfortunately, some people, in-
cluding adults, have some grow-
ing up to do. Caring people have
grown from selfish to selfless;
from “me-minded” to “we-
minded" to “I give you.”
Everyone is encouraged to live
by the Golden Rule which says,
“Do unto others as you would
have them do unto you.’’-The
Golden Rule is a guideline ac-
cepted around the world that
helps people do more good and
less harm to others.
As young people it is important
to remember this rule when you
Womack Lodge Honors
70-Year Memberships
WOMACK — Womack Lodge
#135, Sons of Hermann, has re-
cently been honored to have two of
its members recognized for 70
years of membership in the orga-
nization.
On Saturday, April 1, Grand
President Leroy Muehlstein pre-
sented a 70-year pin to Leone
Schroeder, who became a member
of the Sons of Hermann on March
2, 1930. Leone and her husband,
Rudy Schroeder, reside in the
Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility in
Clifton. In attendance were her
husband, Rudy, daughter Doris
Hadley, granddaughter Sharon,
and local Womack Lodge members
Edwin Conrad and Calvin Rueter,
along with Muehlstein and his wife,
Linda.
Attending the regular meeting of
Womack Lodge #135 on Sunday,
April 2, Muehlstein presented a 70-
year membership pin to Olivia
Walsleben who became a member
of the Sons of Hermann on April 1,
1930. Many of her family were
present for the meeting.
Womack Lodge is proud of these
tw'o fine members as they celebrate
70 years of membership in the Or-
der, said Rueter.
are participating in projects and
activities. As adults, we need to
remember this as we set ex-
amples for other adults and
youths.)
Trustworthiness, respect, re-
sponsibility, fairness, and caring
are all important pillars of posi-
tive character development that
contribute to one’s success.
The next article will explore
the sixth, and last, pillar: citizen-
ship.
