Cubs Keep 1 st-Place
Pace With 2-1 Victory
By David Anderson
CLIFTON RECORD SPORTS EDITOR
CLIFTON - If it’s cold, raining,
and monsoon-like winds are blow-
ing, then the varsity Cubs must be
on the field. That was the case
again Tuesday night — and which
seems to be every game of late —
as Clifton hosted the Comanche
Indians in a District 7-3A match.
When the umpire finally called the
game in the bottom of the sixth in
ning, Clifton had fought hard for a
2-1 victory to keep them atop the
league standings.
Neither team could push across
a run in the first four innings. Co-
manche threatened to score in the
top of the fifth, but starter Rantz
Pierce (5-1) and the Cub defense
tightened and kept a goose-egg on
the Indian side of the scoreboard.
Clifton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom
of the inning as the rains began to
join the hurricane-like winds.
Comanche tied the game in the
top of the sixth at 1-1, but the rain
kept falling harder. The two teams
played on, and the Cubs eventually
loaded the bases. Comanche
walked in what turned out to be the
winning run as the umpires called
the game due to the bad weather.
“We did a good job in the fifth and
sixth getting out of jams, with run-
ners on third and less than two out.
Pierce, Eric Keeton, Clay Cox, and
Jason New all made big plays in
those situations. Taylor Strickland
made a fine running catch on a ball
that would have been at least a
double in the fourth,” Boys’ Head
Baseball Coach Chip Head said of
his defense,
“Pierce was again effective -
allowing just two hits, and those in
the sixth,” Coach Head added
