and minimum relative
avenge wind speed and
Dotential evaoo- tranaouation (the
potential for motsturt loss to the
air from plants and soils).
Pemberton drifted to forestall
putting up these additional data
baenuee doing so overly compli-
cated the tables for the avenge per-
son rending die data.
Additionally, Pemberton has cal-
culated chilling hours To produce
healthy blooms and set fruit, peach
trees need a certain number of hours
of temperature in a specific range.
Pemberton has calculated chilling
hours back to January 1995, and
more importantly for fruit growers,
a current running total, using two
well-accepted methods.
Starting 1991, weather data at the
Overton Center has been recoded
by a Campbell Scientific CR10WP
Weather Station The station col-
lects data digitally, but until 2000
that information wasat directly
linked to the Overton Center office
and lab complex. Someone, usually
Pemberton, had to download the
data on a hand-hekl device and then
transfer it to a computer for proc-
essing and storage. This process
was time consuming, and although
the data were collected, Pemberton
had little time to build a sophisti-
cated website.
In February 2000, a direct cable
was installed, linking the weather
station directly to the Center head-
quarters computer network. The
direct link allowed Pemberton to
access the data directly from her
office computer downloading and
freed up time to analyze the data and
build web pages, she said
“We now have instant access to
current as well as historical weather
data. Both are important. Prior to
1991, the weather data were kept on
forms stored in a closet. Retrieving
the data was time consuming and
laborious. Now it's on the web for
everyone to use. This really mokes
roe feel like I'm making a contribu-
tion," Pemberton said.
Eventually, Pemberton hopes to
make more of this historical data
available on the web Unlike the
digitally collected data, the hand
written data set spans 30 years of
weather and would have to be en-
tered by hand into the computer.
Doing so would require someone
sitting ai a data terminal full time,
deciphering handwritten notes and
entering them into a database
Until there s a general need for de-
tailed historical weather data, this
expenditure of effort would take
time and resources not available to
Pemberton at this time
"If someone has a need for more
detailed weather data prior to 1991,
I'll gladly supply it," Pemberton
said.
She can be contacted via an email
link on the weather page.
"As a researcher, collecting and
analyzing data is what I do. This is
like an ongoing experiment I take a
bunch of numbers and organize
them in such a way that is useful
both to the researchers here and to
the public," Pemberton sard

Dear BUI Phar: A letter from

fected by this, I can only imagine
how the mothers and fathers of
these injured players feel.
Dear Ann Landers: I am an
unemployed woman and must ad-
mit, I haven’t been in the best of
moods lately. I’ve been irritable,
and it doesn’t take much to set me
off. I’m sure the stress of looking
for work has exacerbated a problem
with my friend, “Hank."
Hank is a nice enough guy, but
I’m not interested in anything ex-
cept friendship. Unfortunately, he
wants more. He puts his arm
around my shoulder, holds my hand
and sometimes kisses my forehead.

ing me, he says he cares deeply for
me and wants to show his affection.
We have been friends for close to
10 years, and he is driving me
crazy. Am I just too irritable to see
this clearly? Please tell me what to
do without losing his friendship. -•
Too Touchy-Feely in Texas
Dear Too Touchy-Feely: I
suspect Hank considers the last 10
years an investment in a future with
you! You want to keep him in your
life, but you don’t want to have any
intimacy 'whatsoever. In all fairness
to Hank, you must make it clear to
him that there IS no future with
you and he should find a woman
who would appreciate his tender-
ness, because you aren’t the one.
If Hank continues to touch you
despite your request that he stop, I
suggest you let the friendship cool
