2013 Stock Show ends with BBQ, sale

The 2013 edition of the
annual Winkler-Loving County
Livestock Show ended with a
flurry of excitement Saturday
evening with the BBQ and sale.
A total of 65 animals participated
in the annual sale event.
A number of special awards
were presented at this year’s
show.
A Special Service Award
was given to the family of the
late Julie Purcell for her many
years of service to the Winkler-
Loving 4-H Program.
4-H Senior Scholarship
Awards were presented to
Jacie Youngblood, Jaycie
Hefner, Austin Williamson and
Mackenzie Hotze.
Overall Showmanship
Awards were earned by Jaycie
Hefner, Senior; Lydia Meeks,
Intermediate; and Gracie Hefner,
Junior.
Other showmanship awards

Guns, booze
just don’t mix
Members of the Winkler
County Sheriff’s Department
were called to the scene of an
altercation in Wink Friday night
which resulted in one man being
arrested and the other being
airlifted to Medical Center
Hospital in Odessa.
Sheriff George Keely
reported that Joe Fife, 25, had
been assaulted and knocked
unconscious.
The two men, Fife and Zack
Guidry, 26, are reported to have
met earlier Friday and they
decided to go out and shoot their
pistols.
Sheriff Keely said the two
are believed to have been driving
around in the oil field, shooting
their pistols. Alcohol is also
believed to have been involved.
Fife reported that Guidry
became agitated when he could
not find his pistol. Fife is said
to have stopped the vehicle
and then began to look for the
missing pistol. Witnesses said
Guidry then hit Fife multiple
times with a fiberglass pipe.
Fife was airlifted to Odessa,

WLISD filing underway
for school board seats
Three places on the Wink-
Loving ISD Board of Trustees
are up for re-election this spring.
Place one, currently held by
Minerva Soltero, place two,
currently held by Eddie Brewer
and place three, currently held by
Melissa Halterman are all up for
re-election on May 11. Brandon
Jones has filed for place two.
Jan. 30 was the first day to
file for a place on the ballot with
March 1 being the deadline.
March 12 wifi be the first
day to apply for a ballot by mail
and April 11 wifi be the last to
day to register to vote for the
May election.
April 29 wifi be the first day
of early voting and May 7 the
last day. The election wifi then
be held on May 11.
Filing for a place on the
ballot and early voting wifi
be held in the tax office in the
WLISD school administration
office. The May 11 election wifi
be held in the school cafeteria.
Retiring Supt. Benham
honored at reception
Retiring Superintendant
John Benham was honored at
a reception last Wednesday
afternoon at the Wink School
Cafeteria. Benham had served as
WLISD superintendent for the
past nine years.
He and his wife Jane came
to Wink 19 years ago when he
was hired as the elementary
principal and she assumed duties
as school librarian.
Several members of the Wink
faculty, administration, school
board, staff and community
attended the reception.
During his tenure as
superintendent, Benham
oversaw construction of a
new bus barn, tennis courts,
upgrades to Wildcat field and
was instrumental in the passage
of the $32 million bond package
passed by voters last May.
The couple wifi make their
home in Wimberly, a community
near Austin.
Bonham’s successor, Dewitt
Smith, assumed duties on Feb. 1.
RODNEY HAYES was presented with the Julian Dawson
Service to Community award at Monday night’s Kermit
Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Making the presentation
was Chamber Treasurer Betty Edwards.
WOMAN OF THE YEAR - Vida Simpson (right) was
presented with the Women’s Division award by Betty Hayes.
The presentation was made at the Chamber Banquet held
Monday night.
Chamber banquet ‘huge’ success
A large crowd enjoyed the
festivities at the Annual Chamber
of Commerce Banquet Monday
night and guests enjoyed being
“Lost in the Fifties.”
Attendees entered
Kermit Community Center to
decorations reminiscent of a
50’s prom. Streamers and a giant
sundae greeted guests as they
passed through a pillared entry-
way.
Winkler County Judge
Bonnie Leek gave a welcoming
address to guests. Rev. Charles
Jones, Pastor of Freewill Baptist
Church, offered the invocation.
Chamber President Ken Edwards
was emcee for the event.
Guests were treated to a meal
of chicken fried steak, mashed
potatoes and gravy, pinto beans,
salad and dessert, catered by
Jerrie’s Cafe. Dinner music was
a medley of tunes from the 50’s.

by the Kermit High School
Choir under the direction of
Kermit schools
to host K-BITES

and have many irons in the fire,
but I would love to see more
parent involvement in every
area,” KISD Superintendent Bill
Boyd said on Monday.
On Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6
p.m., KISD wifi host K-BITES
at Kermit Junior High. K-BITES
is an acronym for Kermit

6-7 p.m. at the KJH cafeteria
“We will have some incredible

at 6:45p.m.), and then I wifi
speak to the whole group very
briefly,” Boyd said.

campus in different areas of the
school building. All high school
parents wifi meet in an area of
the junior high school with high
school administrators.

school with their administrators,
and the elementary parents will
stay in the cafeteria with their
administrators.
This is a chance for campus
administrators to go over
important information and to
answer questions from parents.
“Very simply, it is
communication and team
building,” Boyd continued.
Babysitting for children
age four years and up wifi be
available.
“Kermit ISD and your child
ask you to attend K-BITES.
Come as you are and help us
make your child’s education the
best it can possibly be. If you
have questions or some ideas to
make this event better, give me
a call at 432 586-1000,” Boyd
concluded.

presented the “Hall of Honor”
award to Bill and Barbara
Waddell and Bud and Pat White.
The “Service to Youth”
award was presented to Billy
Stevens by director Dorothy
Parker.
Betty Edwards presented
the “Julian Dawson Service to
Community” award to Rodney
Hayes.
Quality Cleaners and owner
Paul Bentley was presented with
the “Business of the Year” award
by Bonnie Leek.
Betty Hayes presented the
“Women’s Division Woman
of the Year Award” to Vida
Simpson.
The benediction was offered
by Rev. Jones.
