On The Beat with Sheriff George Keely
The dust has settled on an-
other Winkler-Loving 4-H Live-
stock Show and it was a totally
successful week for all the many
participants.
Many, many people were in-
volved as volunteers throughout
the eight day process. Of course
many parents attended as well as
many well wishers throughout
the community. Businesses do-
nated money, food, and labor.
The 4-H program is a fam-
ily oriented organization that
teaches many important values
to the children that are involved.
If you had the pleasure to be out
at the 4-H show then you would
have seen the young boys and
girls working hard to prepare
their animals for the show and
auction. You would have seen
the pride and joy on their faces
as they labored away with those
animals. You would have shared
in the tears of joy and happiness
as their animals placed or won
and you would have seen the

anticipation and thankfulness as
their animals sold at the auction.
Numerous times throughout
the week long show, 4-H board
members, 4-H’ers and their
families, and just people in gen-
eral came by the hamburger grill
and thanked me for taking time
to do the cooking. I want all of
you to know that I consider it a
privilege and an honor to be as-
sociated with the 4-H program
and to assist with the show! I
truly enjoy making a contribu-
tion to such a great organization.
Plus, as an added bonus, I had
six grandchildren showing ani-
mals at this year’s show!
There are far too many
people for me to mention their
names one by one so I will say
thank you to the “corps” of
men and women that are at the
4-H Show every year. A special
thank you to all the women that
assisted in serving the food at
the Bar-B-Q on Saturday, as we
could not have got it done with-
out all of you coming forward
and jumping in as volunteers.
A heartwarming thank you to
Joyce Hyde for handling the or-
ders and money at the hamburg-
er grill all week long. You were
terrific Joyce! A thank you to the
three trustees (Doug, Wherta,
and Rico)for all your labor, ser-
vice, and great attitudes. You
three were invaluable. Another
thank you to Mr. Danny King
for his invaluable service as a
volunteer!
I think the show, bar-b-q,
and auction went off great and it
was a successful week for all in-
volved. However, I want you to
remember that it is all about the
kids! Every dollar made, every
bit of volunteerism, every drop
of sweat, every tear shed, every
ounce of effort and work put in
by the families, volunteers, and
those that attended is all for the
kids! That is what makes it so
great and wonderful. If you were
a part of it in any way, you de-
serve a pat on the back. If you
did not take part, I have great
news; we are going to do it again
next year and you will have an-
other chance to jump in and take
part!
There is another big event
headed our way and it will be
here sooner than you expect! The
Roy Orbison Festival is slated to
commence in Wink on June 14.
This festival is a weekend long
event which includes the Pretty
Woman Pageant, a parade, a
softball tournament, downtown
vendors, and free entertainment
and dancing under the stars!
This will be the 24th year in a
row for this fun time. The enter-
tainers will include Gil Shackel-
ford, Dennis Jay, and Jody Nix
and the Texas Cowboys. You
will also be able to dance to the
music of “The Shades!”
If you enjoy good country
music, hanging out with friends,
eating, and just having a relax-
ing time, the 24th Annual Roy
Orbison Festival is the place to
be. I will be there and I hope to
see you all there too!
For those of you that did not
notice yet, the Winkler County
Sheriff’s Office has two new ve-
hicles on the road! Senior Depu-
ty Johnny Armendariz has a new
F-150 Ford pickup truck with a
high intensity light bar! Johnny
has wanted a pickup truck for
years and now he is all smiles.
Senior Deputy and K-9 Of-
ficer Jody Soltero has a new
Ford Explorer SUV and it is
fully equipped to carry his K-9
partner Perry. The vehicle is
set up so Perry can exit the ve-
hicle without Jody’s assistance
to come to Jody’s aide should
the need arise. It is also set up
so if the temperature rises inside
the vehicle to a dangerous level,
the windows automatically roll
down to assist in cooling it off!
The explorer is an “all wheel
drive” vehicle and we are all ex-
cited about having it in our fleet.
God Bless you and be safe!
