Wildcats stay in playoff hunt
IN A CROWD - Wink’s Cory Funderburg (32) fights for a
shot in heavy traffic last Tuesday night in tne home game
against Iraan.
TWO POINTS - Jonathan Puentes (40) scores two points
despite being challenged by Iraan defenders. Iraan won
the district game, 50-42.
Continuing their bid for a
playoff spot, the Wink Wildcats
split District 7-1A games last
week to remain in third place.
Losing at home last Tuesday
night to Iraan and coming
through with a must-win victory
at Van Horn Friday night, the
Wildcats now stand at 4-3 in the
district campaign.
The Wildcats out-hustled
the visiting Iraan Braves last
Tuesday night but cold shooting
proved to be their undoing with
Iraan taking a 50-42 win. Wink
could only manage 25 percent
from the field and 42 percent
from the charity stripe.
Iraan took an 11-5 lead
after the first period and again
outscored the Wildcats 11-8 in
the second for a 22-13 halftime
lead.
A stingy defense in the third
quarter, the Wildcats managed
to outscore the Braves 10-9 in
the third quarter to cut the lead
to 31-23. The Wildcats pulled to
within four points twice in the
final stanza but could not keep
the momentum going as both
teams tallied 19 for the 50-42
Iraan win.
Scoring was evenly
distributed with Jordan Sonnier
and Jonathan Puentes leading
the scoring with eight and
seven points, respectively.
Riley Richardson and Cory
Funderburg followed with six
points each. Eli Augusta, Steve
Avila and Malik Harden scored
four points each with Dominique
Williams adding two.
Funderburg led the
rebounding with eight followed
by Puentes and Williams with
seven and six, respectively.
It looked as if the cold
shooting would continue Friday
night in Van Horn as the Eagles
took a 10-4 first quarter lead. But
the Wildcats got into a groove in
the second quarter, outscoring
the home team 18-6 for a 22-16
halftime lead.
The hot shooting continued
in the third quarter with the
Wildcats hitting the nets for
another 20 points to increase the
lead to 42-28. With the game
well in hand, the Wildcats only
scored three points in the final
stanza and the Eagles nine for
the final score of Wink 45, Van
Horn 37.
Richardson had the hot
hand, leading all scorers with
21 points. Funderburg was also
in double figures with 10 points.
Christian Ortega added six
points, Dominique Williams five
and Jordan Sonnier three.
