Lady Jackets host
Crane Lady Birds
Kermit’s varsity Lady Jacket
basketball squad hosted district
rival Crane Lady Birds last week
and the battle was on until the
final second of play.
Except for a 12 point Kermit
run in the third period, the two
squads were separated by just a
couple of points throughout the
encounter.
After Kermit built a 28-23
lead at the end of the third period,
the Lady Birds began to close the
gap throughout the fourth stanza.
The score was knotted 33-33
and then tied again at 37-all.
With less than three seconds
left on the clock, a foul was
called and Crane added one free
throw to clinch the victory and
keep the contest from going into
overtime.
Denise Sapien was the
leading point-maker for the
Lady Jackets as she sank five
two-point field goals and was
four-of-six from the line for a
total of 14 points.
Amber Cook had two two-
pointers, a three-point field goal
and two free throws for nine
points.
Courtney Moore, Arien
Ditto and Bianca Saenz tallied
four points each and Jasmine
Bolster added two.
WORKING UNDER THE BASKET last Tuesday night in the
district game with Crane is (12) Arien Ditto. Crane won 38-37.
AMBER COOK puts up a short jumper against the visiting
Crane Lady Birds last week. She tallied nine points in the
district contest.
Lady Broncos defeat Kermit
The Sonora Lady Broncos
were a little too much for
the KHS Lady Jacket varsity
basketball squad to handle last
Friday night in Sonora. The
Broncos won 81-46.
Kermit fell behind 14 to
28 in the first quarter. Placing
points on the Jacket side of the
scoreboard were Diannalisa
Davila with one three-pointer,
Bianca Saenz with four points,
Courtney Moore and Arien Ditto
with two apiece and a free throw
by Amber Cook.
The Lady Jackets scored 13
points in the second period and
gave up 18. Scoring for Kermit
was Sapien with four, while
Neima Hernandez, India Rosch,
Ditto and Saenz scored two
points each. Davila added one
free throw.
The distance between the
two squads lengthened more
in the third as KHS tallied nine
points and allowed 17. Scoring
for the Lady Jackets were three
points apiece by Mandy Polanco
and Saenz. Sapien, Cook and
Ditto added one each.
Scoring for the Kermit in
the final period were Saenz with
five points, Jasmine Bolster with
two, Ditto with two and Sapien
with one.
Leading the KHS scoring
effort was Saenz with 14 points.
From the free throw line
Kermit sank 11 of 30 attempts.

Lady cats win two
district encounters
Wink’s Lady cats are playing
perhaps their best basketball of
the year as they won two District
7-1A games to improve their
district record to 6-3. In a game
played in Wink last Tuesday
night, the Ladycats topped the
district leading Iraan Braves by
a 48-39 score. Wink topped the
Van Horn Eagles in a road win
Friday night by a 49-25 score.
Wink took a 14-11 first
quarter lead against Iraan with
Grade Ramos hitting three shots
from three-point range. The
Lady Braves came back to cut
the lead 22-20 by outscoring the
Ladycats 9-8.
The third quarter proved to
be decisive for the Ladycats,
scoring 14 points while an
aggressive defense held the
visitors to only seven points.
Wink led 36-27 after the period.
Iraan came to within three points
late in the fourth quarter but the
Ladycats regained their focus
with both teams scoring 12
points for the 48-39 victory.
Ramos and Lacee Creech
led the Wink attack with 18 and
16 points, respectively. Tiffany
Polanco added eight points.
Madison Murray, Kasey Raska
and Tawny Underwood all
scored two points each.
Raska led the rebounding
effort with 11 followed by
Polanco with nine.
Despite cold shooting in the
first quarter, the Ladycats took
a 7-6 first quarter lead on their
way to a 45-29 win in Van Horn.
Wink took control of the game,
outscoring the Lady Eagles 14-2
for a 21-8 halftime lead.
The Ladycats continued to
dominate the Van Horn squad
in the third quarter as they
outscored the home squad 16-
11 for a 37-19 score. With the
reserves playing most of the final
stanza, Van Horn outscored the
Ladycats 10-8 to end the game
with a 45-29 Lady cat victory.
Ramos and Creech again
led with 21 and 12 points,
respectively. Polanco followed
with eight points with Murray
and Raska adding two each.
Ramos again had three three-
point shots and Creech two.
Ramos and Creech also led
the rebounding with eight and
seven, respectively.
Ladycats earn
playoff berth
With the win over Var
Horn last Friday night, the
Wink Ladycats earned <

place team in District l-lA

Ramos scored 18 points in the game.
EASY SHOT - Wink’s Lacee Creech gets free for an
easy two points in the District 7-1A game. Creech scored
16 points as the Ladycats handed Iraan their only loss of
the district season.
