Ladycats fall to Plains,
clench playoff berth
Playing without two starters,
the Wink Ladycats gave the highly
touted Plains Cowgirls all they
could handle and then some before
losing in a nail-biting match last
Friday afternoon in Wink. Wink lost
to the sixth-rated team in the state in
five close sets - 18-25, 27-25, 25-
22, 23-25 and 13-15.
“I was so proud of the girls,”
Wink Head Coach Paula K. Stewart
said. “We lost two starters (Michelle
Hal term an and Grade Ramos) to
injury and illness and had to plug
players into the middle blocker and
libero positions who were not used
to playing those spots. But you
wouldn’t have been able to tell that
on Friday!”
Despite the loss, the Ladycats
have secured a second place berth
while the Plains Cowgirls clenched
the District 3-1A championship.
With the Ladycats leading 13-
11 in the final set, Plains ran off the
final four points to clench the hard-
fought victor}’.
Gia Garland led the total team
effort with 14 assists, 12 digs, 11
kills and one service ace. Shaye
Youngblood was spectacular in
the back court with 39 digs. Alexa
Uranga was also in double figures
with 19 digs.
Tawny Underwood led the team
in assists with 19 and added seven
digs, two kills and one service ace.
Tiffany Polanco was also strong in
her outside hitter role with 10 kills

and added three digs, one blocked
shot and one sendee ace.
Jordan Graves added six kills,
four blocked shots, one assist and
one dig. K’Leigh Johns added six
kills, five digs and three blocked
shots.
Kim Lara added another five
kills and five blocked shots while
utility player Madison Murray
contributed another five digs.
“The girls played with guts and
heart and I could not be more proud
of the way they carried themselves
in all five games,” Coach Stewart
continued. “To lose in the last
game 13-15 was a heart breaker,
but also a testament to how hard we
have worked this season,” the coach
concluded.
In action last Tuesday night in
McCamey, the Ladycats started off
slow but came back strong to top
the Lady Badgers by scores of 22-
25, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-17.
Defensively, Uranga and
Youngblood scooped up 23 and 11
digs, respectively with Garland and
Murray adding eight each. Graves
and Polanco added five more digs
each and Underwood and Johns
getting four each.
Seven players scored 28 kills on
the front line with Underwood and
Polanco having seven each followed
by Graves with five, Garland with
three and Johns, Youngblood and
Lara all striking for two kills each.
Garland and Underwood led the
team with setting the ball for their
team mates with 14 and 12 assists
each and Murray adding one more.
Johns led the team with four
blocked shots on the front line and
Graves added two. Underwood,
Polanco, Garland and Lara all had
one blocked shot each.
Garland and Murray scored
two service aces each while Graves,
Polanco and Johns added one each.
The Ladycats were scheduled
to end the regular season and district
play against Grandfalls Tuesday
night.
Wink will play the third place
team from District 4-1A in a bi-
district match on Nov.4 or 5 at a
time and place to be determined.
I GOT IT - Wink’s Alexa Uranga sets the volleyball for a return
against the Plains Cowgirls last Friday afternoon. Plains won
the match in five hard-fought games.

Wildcats fall to Iraan, 28-20
the drive as the first quarter came to
an end.
Iraan managed to take
advantage of this opportunity on a
one yard plunge to give them a 14-0
advantage as the second quarter got
underway.
The Wildcats were unable
to move the ball and were forced
to punt giving the ball back to
the Braves. This time, the Braves
marched downfield, capping an
80 yard drive on a 14 yard scoring
drive. With 5:03 left in the first half,
the Wildcats trailed 21-0.
The Wildcats returned the
kickoff to the Wink 35 yard line
and this time would not be denied.
Richardson capped the drive when
he found wide receiver Malik
Harden on a 12 yard scoring pass.
Avila’s PAT kick was good and the
Wildcats were on the board 21-7
with 1:49 left in the first half.
Wink stopped the Braves on
three downs and took the punt at
their own 45 yard line. The first half
ended with the Wildcats stopped at
the Iraan 17 yard line.
Late in the third quarter, Iraan
capped a long drive on a one yard
plunge by Reyes. With the score at
Iraan 28, Wink 7 the game appeared
to be safely in the hands of the
Braves.
But the Wildcats refused to
give up and came back in the fourth
quarter to have a chance to win the
game.
“The kids played hard and we
had a chance to win it,” Hrncir said.
The Wildcats will travel to
McCamey this Friday night for a
game against the Badgers beginning
at 7:30 p.m. A win would clinch a
second place finish and a playoff
berth for the Wildcats.

first quarter. All of the fumbles
were in the Wildcat end of the
field, giving the Braves short field
opportunities. The Wink defense
stopped the threat on two of the
short-field drives but could not stop
the other two.
“You can’t turn the ball over to
a team like Iraan and win,” Hrncir
continued.
The first fumble gave Iraan the
ball at the Wink 35 yard line but the
defense held.
Iraan made good on the short
field opportunity after the second
fumble to take a 7-0 lead with 4:18
left in the first period.
Iraan was again unable to
advance after the next fumble as the
Wildcats stopped the Braves at the
Wink 25 yard line.
“Ashton Haynes at nose guard
and Troy Miller at line backer
played an outstanding defense game
for us,” Hrncir added.
It appeared the Wildcats were
starting to move the ball when they

at the Iraan 45 yard line. But yet

ELUSIVE - Wildcat running back Jordan Sonnier (33) eludes
a would-be Iraan tackier last Friday night for a good gain.
Iraan won the district game.
RILEY RICHARDSON (3) - makes running room against an
Iraan defender with a stiff arm in last Friday’s district game at
Wildcat Field.
HARD STOP - Troy Miller
(50) and Anthony Ramirez
put a stop to Iraan’s hard
running Robert Reyes (34)
last Friday night. Iraan topped
the Wildcats 28-20 to move
into first place in District 5-1 A.
The Wink Wildcats rally from
a 28-7 deficit against the Iraan
Braves fell just short Friday night at
Wildcat field as the Braves escaped
with a 28-20 District 5-1A victory.
With just over a minute left
in the game, the Wildcats faced
a fourth-and-two from inside the
Iraan 15 yard line. But a penalty and
a quarterback sack stopped the rally.
Trailing 28-7 at the beginning
of the fourth quarter, quarterback
Riley Richardson scored from one
yard out, capping a short drive after
an Iraan turnover. Steve Avila’s PAT
kick was good to close the gap to
28-14 with 10:16 left in the game.
After stopping the Braves, the
Wildcat offense again drove down
the field with Richardson adding
another score from four yards out.
Avila’s kick was blocked leaving
the score at 28-20 with six minutes
left in the game.
After stopping the Braves
again, the Wildcats moved quickly
down the field and appeared to be
on the way for a chance to tie the
score when Richardson was sacked
by Iraan standout Robert Reyes.
Reyes was also the leading
rusher for the night with 105 yards
on 22 carries.
“Reyes was clearly the
difference in the game,” Wink Head
Coach Andy Hrncir said.

insurmountable hole early in the
game, fumbling four times in the
