My Dad and the Legend
of Amos Fuddle
I would like to tell you the story of a Legend.
Texas in particular has many legends, from the likes of
Davey Crocket and Sam Houston to Tom Landry and Roger
Staubach. I think my dad would want me to include Tommy
Thompson on this list.
To many in our great state, these legends are larger than life
and known throughout the world for their accomplishments.
But the Legend of which I speak today was not known for his
sacrifice at the Alamo, his victory over Santa Anna, his stoic
presence on the sideline topped with a fedora or his ability to
grab victory from the jaws of defeat on Sunday afternoon.
The Legend of which I speak today is known only to a small
region of Texas known as Winkler County.
This mysterious legend has haunted Winkler County for
many years. However, its presence manifests itself only every
decade or so in the fall, as it rises possibly from the “Wink
Sink” or is it the “Kermit Crater”?
The legend presents itself to us in the form of the written
word: Written words that stir such human emotion as to cause
some who read them to strike back with words of dismay and
contempt; and other readers to merely grin and nod with their
personal intelligence and wisdom validated.
This mysterious Legend wrote of our beloved Dallas
Cowboys, our local Friday night heroes such as the Kermit
Yellow Jackets, Wink Wildcats and the once Mighty MOJO. He
also wrote of the Red Raiders, the Longhorns and the Aggies.
These days I think he might even have something to say the
about the Baylor Bears. Sic’em !
Some of you may still not know of whom 1 speak; and
others may be thinking if the Legend was alive today, they
would punch him right in the mouth.
Today, like a powerful volcano the mysterious legend
lies dormant, waiting for Mother Nature to awaken him. The
identity of the Legend is known only to a few. And to this few,
his wisdom is passed in the dark of night, much like “Deep
Throat”passed his intelligence to Woodward and Bernstein.
I cannot tell you the identity of the first to be anointed as
this legend, and I cannot tell you who the next will be. But I
can tell you that the latest to be known as the legend of Amos
Fuddle...........was my dad Gerald Wayne Speed.
Jacket J V drops
Brownfield 50-6
KHS Jackets
fall to Cubs
“The Yellow Jackets were
firing on all cylinders, beginning
with the running game led by
Chris Stallings and Kobe Lujan,’
said Coach Jeffery Toliver after
Thursday night’s gridiron contest
with the Brownfield Cubs.
Both Stallings and Lujan tallied
two touchdowns each.
“Derek Woods, Nufie Leyva,
Isaiah Marquez and Marco Martinez
did great jobs on the offensive line
as they created holes for the success
of the offense,” Coach Toliver
added.
The Kermit passing game also
rose to the occasion by scoring three
touchdowns as Jeremy Miranda
pulled in passes from QB Justin
Blankenship.
Cited for their defensive hits
were Eric Garcia, Nathan Kiser and
Caleb Huddleston.
Bray den Awbrey also put a stop
to the best Brownfield drive as he
pulled in an interception.
“Overall the Jackets played
a complete game and came away
victorious. Now the jackets have
a week to prepare for the Idalou
Wildcats,” the coach added.
Final score: Kermit 50—
Brownfield 6.
The Kermit Yellow Jackets
took on the Brownfield Cubs
Friday night and it was a tale of
two halves.
At halftime the Cubs
managed to hold a narrow
three-point lead. 31-28, but
then Brownfield managed to
take the game in hand and tally
another 21 points in the fourth
quarter. Final: Kermit 28—
Brownfield 52.
The contest began with the
Cubs taking the opening kick-
off and 11 plays later scored
from the two-yard line.
The Jackets answered by
scoring their first TD nine plays
later on a pass from QB Jared
Easley to Jantzen Michel. The
PAT was blocked, leaving the
score Kermit 6—Brownfield 7
The Cubs put together
another score, only to be
followed moments later as the
Jackets tied the game 14-14 as
Michel scored from 40 yards
out. Easley’s pass to Jovanny
Garcia added the two-point
conversion.
The Jackets then took the
lead 21-14 with 11:46 to go in
the second period on a 15-yard
pass to Garcia.
The Cubs managed to
tie the score 21-21 midway
through the quarter.
The lead changed again as
Easley connected with Ozzie
Lujan for a 47-yard TD to put
KHS on top 28-21.
Prior to the half, the Cubs
tied the score at 28 and then
booted a field goal to take the
lead 28-31.
After a scoreless third
stanza the Cubs managed to
add 21 points in the fourth to
put the game away.
The Jackets had Xavier
Quiroz go down with a
shoulder injury. Both Quiroz
and Richard Muniz are
questionable for Friday night’s
contest with Idalou.
Coach Arick Heredia cited
Easley, Michel and Jacob
Carrasco for their offensive
performances.
“Our offense played a
really great first half,” Coach
Heredia added.
Easley completed 21 of 40
passes for 332 yards and four
TD’s.
Receiving for the Jackets
were Michel with nine catches
for 129 yards and three TD’s,
Carrasco with seven receptions
for 111 yards and one TD.
Nathan Ornelas caught three
passes for 59 yards, Isaiah
Saenz pulled in one for 24
yards and Quiroz had one for
nine yards.
Gaining yards on the
ground for KHS were Keele
Valenzuela with 29 yards on 10
attempts, Quiroz with 27 yards
on two attempts, Carrasco with
17 yards on three attempts and
Lujan with two yards.
Defensively the Jackets
were led by Jovanny Garcia
and Michel with 13 tackles
each. Adding to the tackle
total were Valenzuela with
12; Quiroz, Darius Crow and
Devin Awbrey with eight
each, Ornelas, Daniel Cooper
and Duke Abalos with seven
apiece, Joseph Bustamante
with six, Carrasco and Isaiah
Saenz with four each, AJ
Gonzales and Lujan with
three each, and Isaac Martinez
and Ruben Juarez with two
each. Adding one tackle each
were Dylan Floriana, Juan
Valenzuela, Adrian Carrasco,
Jordan Melendez and Richard
Muniz.
Friday night the Yellow
Jackets will host Idalou. In
discussing the game Coach
Heredia pointed out that Idalou
is not as large as they have
been in years past but “they are
good at what they do and like to
take advantage of opponents’
mistakes.
Kermit seniors will be
recognized prior to the start of
the contest.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.

7th Daubers blast
Brownfield 22-0
The KJHS seventh grade
Dauber football squad invaded
the Brownfield Cub’s home turf
last week and handed the home
team a resounding 22-0 defeat.
“Our seventh grade B-team
picked up right where they
left off last week,” said Coach
Enrique Gomez. ‘They began
pushing the ball up the field right
from the beginning of the game
and never let up.”
Scoring began as Wade
Halterman connected with
Heman Hernandez for a quick
touchdown and then Hernandez
ran the ball again for another
touchdown.
Adding the next score was
Pedro Hernandez.
“The defense played tough
and made sure the Cubs were not
given the opportunity to get back
into the game,” Coach Gomez
added.
7th B-Team vs. Cubs
“In the battle between the
seventh grade Dauber and Cub
A-teams the KJHS crew kept
pushing the ball up the field, but
were not successful in stopping
the Cubs’ rushing game in the
first half,” Coach Gomez said.
The Daubers turned things
around in the second half as
Kermit was able to put points on
the board.
Coach Gomez cited Justin
Cook for the Dauber offensive
success. The coach also noted
the KJHS defense for putting
the brakes on the Brownfield
rushing game in the second half.
Final score: Kermit 6—
Brownfield 24.
