Cheese Factory share once held by WJ. Jones of Valley Mills
FORMER CHEESE FACTORY MILK PRODUCER - W.H. Jones, the grandfather of current Valley Mills City
Secretary Wanda Harris, Is shown during the late 1920s delivering milk to the Valley Mills Cheese and Butter
Factory. The original building was turned over the to city in the early 1930s and has been the city hall for as
long as anyone can remember.

Continued From Page One
Butter factory doubled its produc
tion within a month and a half af
ter its opening on Dec 10, 1928
This came after an opening day’s
receipts of 3,500 pounds, receipts
having grown by mid January to
almost 7,000.
“Growth was so rapid that new
equipment was ordered within 30
days of the opening
“D C Kirk, who comes from the
Kraft Cheese company at Stock
ton, 111., to manage the Valley
Mills plant, says that Valley Mills
farmers can produce milk at half
what it costs in the northern
states.”
In an article dated July 12,1929,
it said, “From December to May,
nearly a million pounds of milk
were received at the plant from
which almost a 100,000 of cheese
were made.”
Sometime, between 1930 and
1936, the cheese factory closed at
Valley Mills. The old timers say
that the building was simply given
to the City of Valley Mills. At this
time, no one is sure exactly when
ft closed, but one report has a
school dance being held in the
building in 1936.
The building has been the Val
ley Mills City Hall since most can
remember
