“We’ve been in many
countries and all over the
U.S. and this is the first time
I’ve eaten hot glazed donuts-
-and they’re delicious!" says
Grant Blackledge, owner of
the Onalaska Flea Market
and the Blackledge In-
surance Agency. He and his
wife, Josephine, are regular
customers of Aunt Maggie's
Bakery.
Open since March, 1983,
Aunt Maggie’s Bakery is
owned and operated by
Margaret Mathison and her
sister and brother-in-law,
Mavis ahd Carl Wolf.
If you haven’t tasted a
made-from-scratch, hot-
from-the-oven donut lately,
try Aunt Maggie’s. Included
in the variety of baked goods
the shop offers are cakes,
coffee cakes, pies, tur-
novers, rolls, Hungarian cup
cakes, fritters, cookies,
“elephant ears or crispies,
brownies etc. and home-
made bread.
“We usually bake fresh
bread Tuesdays, Thursdays
and Saturdays,” says
Margaret “People call In
and reserve the bread in ad-
vance.” She adds. “I also
.have people coming from
Liyingston, Blanchard and
Trinity to buy our fresh
donuts.”

than a bakery; the tables
and chairs in the shop invite
you to sit down and enjoy a
few unhurried minutes
there.
“We wanted a place with a
friendly atmosphere where
people could sit down and
relax and have a cup of cof-
fee and a donut,” says
Margaret, or ‘‘Aunt
Maggie” as she is known by
her nieces and nephews who
gave the bakery its name.
She continues. “Except for
the cabinets and air condi-
tioning, we finished the in-
side of the building
ourselves. All the family
helped, including Carl and
Mavis and my sister Ruth,
her husband Bill Veeman
and their boys. I even learn-
ed how to tape and float and
put down floor tile.”
The result is an attractive,
country-fresh look conducive
to enjoying the tastes of
fresh-baked goods. Aunt
Maggies also serves hot or
cold drinks with your donut
or roll. In the summer mon-
ths, sandwiches on home-
made rolls will be just the
thing for lunch.
Aunt Maggie’s also
custom-bakes and decorates
cakes for all occasions-
including anniversaries,
weddings, showers and bir-
thdays. “We’re always try-
ing new things,” she says.
She will also cater for
smaller parties or special oc-
casions, and in the past has
catered refreshments for the
grand opening of the Com-
munity State Bank in
Onalaska, among others.
“We work 12 hours a day,”
she says. “We’re here at 4:30
a.m. We’re open to the public
from 6 a.m. till 4 p.m.
Tuesdays - Saturdays. Sun-
day, we’re open 8-12 noon.”
Members of their family
help out when necessary.
And because of the increase
in business, they also have
Sheri Baxter who does a lit-
tle bit of everything and
waits on customers. Sheri is
a student at Sam Houston
State University, but lives in
Onalaska.
Before getting involved in
the business of baking
“goodies” Carl Wolf who
prepares the donuts, fritters,
etc. was cost-engineer at
Fluor in Houston. He enjoys
the change and is glad to be
his own boss. Mavis, his
wife, teaches at the
Onalaska Elementary
school, and is in charge of
bookkeeping. Before moving
—
permanently to the Lake
Livingston area. Carl and
Mavis lived In Houston for
app. 22 years.
“I was ladies’ sportswear
buyer for Oshman’s for 10%
years in Houston,” Margaret
says. “But we’ve been com-
ing up to this area weekends
for the past 11 years, and
now decided to call this
home.” Bonus here Is the
lack of traffic and the friend-
ly atmosphere.
Carl and Mavis Wolf have
2 daughters; one is a student
of nursing at U of H; another
is graduating this fall from
Texas A&M with a major in
chemistry. Carl likes to fish
and can ‘‘fix most
anything.” Margaret likes to
do needlework and enjoys
working with plants. They
belong to the Methodist
Church and the Chamber of
Commerce here.
Aunt Maggie’s invites you
to come by sometime and try
their home-baked goodies.
You’re sure to come back for
more.
