PUEBLO, Colo.—Some things you
just can't buy in stores — like the Yogi
Bear collector’s glasses you need to
complete your set, those hubcaps you
want for your vintage car, or an origi-
nal movie poster from “The Day tne
Ants Attacked " In the past you had to
search high and low for these treasures.
But today’s Internet auction sites have
made finding them a lot easier.
Learn the ins and outs of Internet
auctions and how to protect yourself
when shopping on-line with a new pub-
lication package from the Federal Con-
sumer Information Center. Use
Internet Auctions: A Guide for Buyers
and Sellers from the U.S. Federal
Trade Commission to find out about
the different types of auctions, con-
cerns to keep in mind, tips for buying
and selling, and who to contact for

Before you buy anything in an Inter-
net auction, know who is selling the
item. Verify the seller’s identity before
you place the bid. Be suspicious of sell-
ers you can't identify — it may be im-
possible to contact the seller if
something goes wrong after the sale.
Get his or her telephone number and
try it out — to make sure you have
another way to contact the seller be-
sides e-mail.

Electronic Records
May Improve Care
For Homeless Persons
HOUSTON - Providing quality
medical care for the “homeless” can
be a challenge, especially when these
individuals seek care at clinics or
head straight to the emergency room.
But, electronic medical records, also
called an EMR system, might allow
these transient patients to receive
better care, both in the hospital and
in a clinical setting, said Dr. David
Buck, an assistant professor of fam-
ily and community medicine at Bay-
lor College of Medicine and medical
director for Healthcare for the Home-
less-Houston.
Healthcare for the Homeless-Hous-
ton recently instituted an EMR system
that will connect all participating
healthcare providers who treat the
homeless, ultimately helping in the
coordination and continuity of services.
It also might serve as an important
research component, allowing doctors
to better understand this population.
The EMR system removes the
guesswork for physicians because all
of the pertinent information is acces-
sible on the Internet. This electronic
record details a patient’s medical,
family and social history while also
covering items such as habits, aller-
gies, vital signs, reports from physi-
cal exams, and doctors’ assessments.
Aside from providing access to patient
records, medications and lab reports,
Buck said the EMR system is designed
to increase cooperation among all partici-
pating healthcare sites.
