Kopperl is located near Lake Whitney
and sees traffic from lake travelers.
Kopperl, Texas
The small town of Kopperl in north-
eastern Bosque County was first settled
around 1856, but it was several years
before much growth was seen. The first
lots drawn off in Kopperl did not actu-
ally exist until 1881. On Sept 5,1881, the
first Kopperl post office was estab-
lished.
In 1882, the first school was built
there, as was a Methodist church. In
1883, the Kimball Masonic Lodge
moved to Kopperl, and the lodge took
on the name of the town in 1891.
Several more churches were built in
the next 40 years. In 1932, the present
high school building was built. In 1940,
the original school building was tom
down to make way for a gymnasium,
and an elementarv classroom and
lunchroom were added in 1958.
Businesses that thrived in early Ko-
pperl included a drug store, general mer-
chandisers, a 10-room hotel, and a bank.
The bank closed in 1943, with assets
transferred to institutions in Clifton and
Meridian.
Other businesses that operated from
time-to-time included a cotton gin, gro-
cery stores, insurance agencies, and ga-
rages and gas stations.
When construction began on lake
Whitney in the 1950s, a levee was built
around Kopperl to protect the town from
flooding. Several fishing camps sprang up
in and around Kopperl following the fill-
ing of the new lake.
Modern-day Kopperl, although an un
incorporated city, is home to a fine
school system, several churches, a post
office, a volunteer fire department, ca
fes, the Masonic Lodge, and other es
tablishments.
