Cooperatives contribute to cause
LIVINGSTON - Sam Houston
Electric Cooperative, along with
other cooperatives that subscribe to
Texas Co-op Power magazine,
contributed donations touting
$10,000 to the American Red Cross
Liberty Fund. The donation was
funded from margins generated by
Texas Co-op Power magazine, a
monthly publication of Texas Elec-
tric Cooperative.
In addition to Sam Houston Elec-
tric’s contribution to the statewide
Texas Co-op Powet effort, em-
ployees Of the cooperative raised
over $1,600 by hosting a garage
sale in Livingston. All proceeds
from the garage sale were donated to
the New York Sute World Trade
Center Relief Fund.
Genette Harrelson, manager of
Customer Services for Sam Hous-
ton Electric, expressed in a letter
accompanying the employees' dona-
tion to the relief fund, “We watched
in horror and disbelief with the rest
of the world on Sept. 11.... We arc
so far away and have always seemed
so different than the city folk of
Flag retirement
ceremony set
LIVINGSTON - A flag retire-
ment ceremony is slated for sunset
(between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.) on
Monday at the American Legion
Hall.
The faded, worn and uttered flags
will be retired and destroyed in an
honorable rite.
The public is invited to bring
their flags for retirement. *
Those involved say it is a mov-
ing and beautiful ceremony with a
21-gun salute performed by the
Veterans of Foreign Wan.
Refreshments will be served im-
mediately following the program.

the immediate and emerging efforts
of the American Red Cross to alle-
viate the extensive human suffering
brought about by the Sept. 11 ter-
rorist attacks. Communities in East
Texas and across the nation are
reaching out to do whatever they
can to help. Those who would like
to contribute to the American Red
Cross Liberty Fund may contact
www.redcross.org. Donations to the
New York State World Trade Center
Relief Fund can be made through
www.helping.org.
Sam Houston Electric Coopera-
tive, founded in 1939 by a group of
rural residents m East Texas, pro-
vides electricity to over 48,000
members in parts of 10 counties.
Wreck injures one
LIVINGSTON — A 39-year-old
Livingston man was injured Sunday
in a one-vehicle accident on FM
3277, 9.7 miles west of Living-
ston.
John’Christopher Franklin was
driving’a 1989 Ford Aerostar van
westbound when the van went out
of control in a curve, according to
Texas Highway Patrol Trooper
Larry Pitts. The van went off the
right side of the road, crossed back
to the left, went into a creekbed and
struck two trees.
Franklin, who was listed as hav-
ing sustained non-incapacitating
injuries, was taken by ambulance to
Memorial Medical Center - Liv-
ingston. He was charged with DW1
and no liability insurance.
The accident occurred at approxi-
mately 3:45 p.m.
