John Ike Walton
John Ike Walton was born in 1942 and came to Kerrville in 1950 with his retired parents, William Dewey Walton and Emma Barnet Walton. His musical start was the piano with Mrs. Brehmer as his teacher. He played in the Schreiner Band and met Gibbs Milliken who taught him how to play the drums by ear. Ray Gutierrez, a 6th grade classmate who played the guitar and sang, inspired John Ike to become a musician. John Ike played at Dirty Barton's in Austin and at The Dunes in Port Aransas. He played with songwriter Rokky Ericson at Dick Clark's American Bandstand. John Ike was a founding member and drummer with the psychedelic band, The 13th Floor Elevators. John Ike is involved in the creation of two portable instruments, the chromatic Kalimba and the Zulu Drum. He is in theTexas Music Hall of Fame.
