'Jaws' called
to free man
LIVINGSTON - A 48-year-old Liv-
ingston man was seriously injured
Wednesday when his 1988 Chevrolet
pickup truck ran off UJS. 59, 5.7
miles north of Livingston, and over-
turned onto its side.
The driver, Vernon Eugene Lowe
Sr., was taken by ambulance to Lake
Livingston Medical Center. A
passenger in the truck, 27-year-old
Jimmy Hennington, was not injured,
according to Texas Highway Patrol
Trooper Paul Heame.
The highway was being resurfac-
ed and the lanes were uneven.
Witnesses said Lowe was south-
bound in the inside lane and ran off
the uneven surface, Heame’s report
indicated. The pickup truck swerved
into the median, then skidded across
the highway and into a ditch, where
it rolled over onto its side.
“Jaws of Life” equipment from
the Livingston Volunteer Fire
Department was used to help free
the driver from the wreck.
Lowe was charged with first of-
fense DWI and not wearing a seat
belt, according to the trooper’s
report.
The accident occurred at 11:30
p.m.
