The walls of the dining area
were hung with large murals
depicting tropical scenes, while
tall palm trees accented the
theme. The tables, laid with
white, were centered with clus-
ters of fruit and flowers in unique
shell arrangements. The gay-col-
ored program booklets were in
the form of fresh pineapples,
while the shell-shaped place
cards were further decorated
with miniature figures of danc-
ing girls, surfers, and palm
trees, as favors.
The guests enjoyed exotic-
foods consisting of shark steak,
surfer’s dream, bamboo shoots,
Sun god's salad, ocean rolls,
tropical punch, and mermaid’s
delight, eaten by candlelight with
island music in the background.
After the invocation by Dennis
Poe, a junior student, the wel-
come was extended by David
Fehler, junior class president.
Jim Bryant, senior class presi-
dent, gave the response. Several
members of the junior class en-
tertained with “take-offs” on the
seniors.
An atmosphere of enchantment
prevailed at the prom because
of its various highlights such as
the mountain waterfall; the
grass shacks surrounded by exot-
ic plants and birds: the huge
I sailing vessel anchored nearby:
the hurricane lamps; the island
with its Ti-Ki gods and flaming
i torches, where preparation for a
; luau was at its height, with the
pig roasting on the spit, and the
steaming concoction rising from
the big black kettle. The huge
fishnets, hung with tropical dish
and other deep sea paraphernalia
caught the attention as they
emerged through the flourescent
lighting. The smoking volcano in
one direction and the snowcap-
ped mountains in another, pre-
sented interesting background
for the picturesque rose bower
equipped with wicker furniture;
and the “swing for four” which
was entwined with tropical flow-
ers? Perhaps the large anchor
swing “built for two” was as
popular as any nook — for pic-
tures, while entering the bamboo
hut and ladling punch from the
large flower-decked ice punch-
bowl was also delightful.
The guests danced to the mod-
ern rhythms of “The Inquisition"
and’The East-West Relations.”
The prom was held at the Clif-
ton Armory building.
