Letters To
The Editor
DEAR EDITOR;
At the corner of Hackberry
and Ave I there used to be a
beautiful old hackberry tree.
It s not there anymore. It was
cut down because it had one
dead limb, that had withstood a
violent windstorm the night
before. It is one thing to trim a
tree: it's another to destroy it.
When this matter was
brought before the City Council
their response was to laugh! 1
ask the citizens of Clifton to
come forward and demand more
responsible and responsive
government, a government that
is interested in the environmen-
tal quality of this beautiful
town.
Mr. J. R. Tuttle
Clifton, Texas
DEAR EDITOR:
Having been a part of Clifton
city government for the past
four years, I must say that
certain events that have taken
place in the last few days leave
a bad taste in mv mouth.
Clifton’s police department
was awarded a substantial pay-
increase at last Tuesday’s coun-
cil meeting. This was necessary
to allow the department to
compete with other cities re the
living of personnel. Two days
later, on Friday morning, the
council reeinded a portion of
this increase saying that it was
unaffordable.
The Mayor and council
should be reminded that when
this year's budget was to he
presented, the mayor furnished
the council with only a budget
summary which did not meet
mandatory guidelines. The
council was asked to approve
this '‘budget" at that time.
Affording them no time to study
it. We voted to reject the budget
and the mayor refused to sub-
mit a proper one making it nec-
essary for the council to formu-
late their own. Mayor Eisen-
hower commented at that time
that it was not necessary to ever
have a budget His comment
was "you just spend the money
as you get it". I find in
perplexing that the mayor sud-
denly is so concerned with
affordability".
Is this the same Mayor
Eisenhower who managed to
stretch a fifty thousand dollar
airport facility into an eightv-
nine thousand dollar one; a
twelve thousand dollar water
well into a thirty thousand
dollar one that was to have been
in operation last September, but
is still not? Is this the same
person who finds it compulsory
to attend every meeting of
mayors in the U. S.; even
Hawaii at the taxpayers ex-
pense?
I think the time has come for
the mayor and council to g
their priorities in order. W
the inflationary economy til
we have faced in the last fi ;
years and obviously will col
tinue to face, certain budgets |
crises will arise that must fa
dealt with. This can only 19
done by careful planning and
by including an adequate su|
plus in the budget. Clifton ha -j
for many years enjoyed a veil
low-tax base. This cannot cotl
tinue without the proper attei
tion of our elected officials. 1
the city cannot afford to lil
competitive in the job marke .
then we may get to actually sc
the mayor in the garbage truckj
Incidently, Mr. Mayor, yo
can dump the garbage on th
property that you brag abm
having stolen from that ol
w idow woman. That lady w; I
my Sunday School teacher whe I
I was a boy.
Respectfully yours,
Frank P. Smith, Jr.

County
Now Has
Three DPS
Troopers
Bosque County will he limited
to three Department of Public
Safety Highway Patrol troopers
lor the foreseeable future. The
county had four troopers on
duty until Acey Steel, formerly
of Clifton, w as transferred to
Abilene March 25.
Still remaining in the county
with the DPS are Troopers
Gerald Baker of Clifton and
Larry Coffman and Curry John-
son of Meridian.
At the time of Trooper Steel's
transfer, the county lost his slot
to Bell County. Captain G. J.
Matthews. Highway Patrol dis-
trict captain for the 22-countv
DPS Waco district, pointed out
that Bell County had 930
accidents, 26 of them involving
fatalities, during 1977, as a-
gainst 167 rural traffic accidents
in Bosque County last year.
The district’s greatest traffic
problem is in Bell County at
present, Capt. Matthews said.
Flic DPS policy is to assign
troopers in relation to what it
sees as the law enforcement
needs of the areas. The decision
is based on statistics compiled
by the DPS headquarters in
Austin on rural traffic acci-
dents.
Bell County now has 16
troopers, as against three for
Bosque County. However.
Capt. Matthews pointed out
that with three troopers, Bos-
que County still has a 50 per
cent increase over the two
troopers stationed here four
years ago.
At that time, only Troopers
Baker and Coffman were on
duty for the DPS in this county.
The three troopers here are
not limited to their residential
areas, but work throughout the
county on staggered shifts.
Pickup
Fire
Fire destroyed a pickup
owned by Community Public
Service Company May 11. The
Clifton Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment was called at 418 South
Ave. G at 6:50 p.m. to fight the
blaze.
It doesn’t make much sense to start my column off this wee
praising another local columnist but this here's the week I’ve got it
donate a lot of newsprint to the many folks that make thi:
publication happen.
Mr. Lon Wiliams, better known around Clifton’s coffee shops as
"The Tank Valley Aggie", took over The Clifton Record about
month ago and proceeded to hire the most professional staff th;
could be found to operate the publication. Up until two weeks age
when a death in his family took him temporarily out of town, Lon !
lived and breathed The Record. He spent so much time at th
newspaper office that when he finally did go home, his kids didn
know him, the locks had been changed and his faithful K-9 up an
hit a plug out of his leg.
The first time I came face to face with Lon was about three week
ago. I had heard that a strong newspaper was being built in Bosqu
County and I just had to come see for myself. I came rolling into Th
Record office about 2'ish one windy afternoon only to see a walking
talking aggie jokebook in the flesh. Williams was standing on top o
a chair, in the middle of the room a empty light socket above and ;
bulb in hand. The room got deathly quite as Lon balanced hiself or
the chair arm. Suddenly Lon said, "O.K. I'm Ready." At that
instant the numbers of his staff picked up the chair and turned in a
clock-wise motion as Williams screwed in the bulb.
Well. I got to confess. After seeing that b -illiant display of
management and team work. I knew 1 had found a home. And here
I've been ever since!
I mentioned a team when I referred to The Clifton Record staff
but really that's a mild way to describe this group of people.
To my professional knowledge, 1 have never run across a more
dedicated, honest, hardworking staff. These people believe in
Clifton and Bosque County and prove it every edition.
On the editorial side of things, Bill Jordan has performed with a
honored journalistic background. Robert Baldridge has covered
Cub sports from baseball to golf, always with a little bit of his good
nature stirred in. And what can 1 say about Nell Jenscon, well I
guess she's about the most knowledgable citizen around on local
affairs and events. If it happens in Bosque County she knows it and
iepolls it. In order to keep abreast of our ever growing county
circulation, local correspondents such as Mrs. Dick Blassingame.
Harriet Apple, Gloria Moseley, Delmelia Dunn, Versia Giese, Patsy
Owen. George Wages cover the county and get the facts. Backing
up this editorial team are two local photographers; David Copier
and Randy Riggs. From high-jumpers to thunder storms, Riggs and
Copier catch it on film.
On the advertising end of the stick "Young Pro" Lynn Bellah
along with Cliftonite Jean Ann Smith make local cash registers ring
with advertising campaigns designed to bring people all over
Bosque County to shop in Clifton.
In business and bookkeeping Mary Ellen Ludwig and Waldine
Mack keep us on the straight and narrow with updates and
projections. All of which keeps this growing organization financial
healthly.
Beverly Jordan an| Elaine Gee head up the circulation
department. Believe me. those ladies have been busy as The
Record has sold more new subscriptions and taken more renewals
this last month than any other lime in its history.
I he new sty lish format that you ve seen in the paper can be
credited to the composition department. Maclyn Jones and Janie
Weber spend long nightly hours perfecting what you see even
Thursday.
Oh Yea. I forgot the most important ingredient in the success of
The Record and that's YOU. Yes you. the reader, the subscriber,
the person who buys the Clifton Record, who shops at the stores
who advertise in it and the person who picks up the phone and calls
when something of interest happens. Yes, you the reader. And that
is NO JOKE!.
