Social Security Changes
Are Listed in New Law
According to A1 Bracken,
District Manager of the Waco
Social Security Office, disabi-
lity payments under the social
security law are no longer lim-
ited to persons with permanent
disabilities.
Bracken said he feared many
people were not yet aware of
a change in the social security
law under which they may be
have a disability that is ex-
pected to last 12 months. Pre-
viously persons could get bene-
fits only if they had a disabi-
lity that was expected to con-
tinue for a long and indefinite
time, or result in death.
Bracken pointed out that
formerly many disability claims
were disallowed because the
impairment, although severe,
was not expected to be of long
and continued duration. Any
mental or physical impairment
that is totally disabling and is
expected to continue for as long
as 12 months meets the require-
ments of the definition of dis-
ability under the new law.
According to Bracken, the
work record requirement has
not been changed. A worker
must still have worked under
social security at least 5 years
out of the 10-year period just
before the date the worker be-
came disabled in order to qua-
lify for disability payments. It
is not necessary that the five
years be continuous. Twenty
calendar quarters of work per-
formed at any time during the
10 • year period, even though
they are scattered or intermit-
